The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) Assistant Professor Xinfei Guo and his collaborators recently won the Best Paper Award at the 2022 IEEE 35th International System-on-Chip Conference (SOCC) for their work “RECO-HCON: A High-Throughput Reconfigurable Compact ASCON Processor for Trusted IoT.”This work was done in collaboration with California Polytechnic State University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. JI undergraduate student Xiangdong Wei is the first co-author, Zhengping Zhu is the third author, and Xinfei Guo is the corresponding author.

The 15th International Conference on Intelligent Robotics and Applications (ICIRA 2022) was held in Harbin from August 1 to 3. Master’s student Mr. Hao Xu from the Institute of Design and Control Engineering for Heavy Equipment at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who was guided by Professor Weizhong Guo, gave a presentation on his research paper entitled“Design and Analysis of a Novel Magnetic Adhesion Robot with Passive Suspension”, which helped him win the Best Student Paper Award.

The inaugural SDG July Camp hosted by SJTU officially closed on July 16th, 2022, at 2 pm Beijing time. Around 150 participants attended the online closing ceremony, including instructors and students from 35 partner universities in 22 countries from across five continents.

Stellar flares are instantaneous explosions triggered by magnetic reconnection in the corona. They can be associated with high-energy particles and photons that can erode planetary atmospheres and could have an impact on planetary habitability. A research group, led by TDLI postdoc fellow Dr. Masataka Aizawa, has identified a new population of high-speed and powerful optical flashes from red dwarfs (Fig. 1) using Tomo-e Gozen, an optical wide-field high-cadence observational system, which allows a "video" observation of the sky. The detected very fast and powerful flares are likely to be produced by strong magnetic fields, potentially affecting planetary habitability.

The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) Associate Professor Hua Bao’s research team has developed an ultra-efficient and parameter-free phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) solver capable of obtaining accurate temperature distribution in 3D transistors (with 13 million degrees of freedom in the numerical simulation), marking by far the most efficient non-Fourier thermal simulation solver that has been reported in the literature. The research article entitled “Ultra-efficient and parameter-free computation of submicron thermal transport with phonon Boltzmann transport equation” was recently published in Fundamental Research, a journal sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Recently, the team of Professor Guangyin Yuan from the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University published the latest research results on the processing of degradable zinc alloy micro-tubes and vascular stents online in Acta Biomaterialia. The research paper is titled "Fabrication and characterization of biodegradable Zn-Cu-Mn alloy micro-tubes and vascular stents: microstructure, texture, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior”.

Recently, the 5th “Huawei Cup” China Postgraduate IC Innovation Competition (CPICIC) was successfully held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. SJTU students have won the grand prize “The Star of Innovation” and four first prizes, two second prizes and a third prize. They are students at the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering (SEIEE): the Department of Micro-Nano Electronics and the Department of Electronic Engineering.

A scientific innovation team led by three undergraduate students from the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) was awarded the first prize in the recently concluded 2022 China-U.S. Young Maker Competition Shanghai Division for their project “Degage White: A Brushless Tooth Flusher”. The team also qualified for the global grand final of the competition set to be held next month.

On August 24, 2022, the Chinese embassy in France held a reception to promote Sino-French cooperation in education, present the development of Chinese education, and introduce the new visa policy for French students in China. Present at the event were the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and universities in France, international students who have recently studied in China, and students of the Confucius Institute.

2022 marks 110 years since the birth of the late Prof. Chien-Shiung Wu. To commemorate her life, the Chinese Physical Society and the American Physical Society jointly hosted the “International Forum on the 110th Birth Anniversary in Honor of Madame C. S. Wu”. The event, organized by the Nanjing University Alumni Association United States, was held near Washington, D.C., U.S., on September 24th. Over 120,000 people attended the event online and offline.

On August 25th, 2022, the opening ceremony for the undergraduates admitted to Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in 2022 and the first class after their admission were held. Secretary of the SJTU Party Committee Yang Zhenbin, SJTU President and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Lin Zhongqin, and other executive leaders of SJTU, alumni representatives, representatives of SJTU partners, faculty representatives, student representatives, and the new undergraduates, all witnessed the moment of the new undergraduates embarking on a new journey in 17 venues including the Henry Fok Stadium of the Minhang Campus.

On August 31st, over 80 teachers and students from the School of Oceanography of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) boarded the icebreaker Xuelong. During the trial voyage from September 1st to 6th, they worked with professionals from the Polar Research Institute of China under the Ministry of Natural Resources to deliver a weeklong project, “Practice on the Sea”, combining science with education.

From August 21st to 25th, the Multi-Boson Interactions 2022 (MBI2022) was held in Shanghai. As an annual international conference organized under the guidance of its International Advisory Board, the MBI focuses on the latest experimental results and theoretical calculations of high energy of the final states of multi-bosons (W, Z, photons, Higgs, etc.) and looks forward to the research prospects and theoretical vision of multi-boson physics in collider experiments, aimed at promoting the exchanges between experimental and theoretical scholars, and discussions over the physics research in multi-boson interactions under the standard model and the new physical framework beyond the standard model.

The China Automation Congress 2021 (CAC 2021) and the 60th Anniversary of the Chinese Association of Automation (CAA) were recently held in Kunming. Twelve scientists were granted the Outstanding Contribution Award for the 60th Anniversary of the CAA at the congress, including Professor Xi Yugeng from the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU).

Routledge, the top publishing house in the English-speaking world that specializes in humanities and social sciences, recently published “After Postmodernism”, a monograph by Wang Ning, a senior professor of humanities and social sciences at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and a foreign member of Academia Europaea. The first edition of this book by Professor Wang was published in Chinese in 1997 and has been continuously revised and expanded upon since then.

Fortune China Magazine recently released a list of 84 most socially influential startups in China in 2022, covering a wide range of areas, such as intelligent manufacturing and services, medicine and medical device R&D and commercial services, and aerospace technology. One of the startups is Mega Phase Technology (which includes Shanghai Shengxiang Industrial Testing Technology Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Shengwei Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.), jointly founded by four alumni of the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute, i.e., Wu Di (Class of 2011, B.S. in Mechanical Engineering), Huang Xian (Class of 2011, B.S. in Mechanical Engineering), Huang Zheng (Class of 2011, B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Class of 2014, M.S. in Electronic Science and Technology), and Gu Jinwei (Class of 2011, B.S. in Mechanical Engineering).

On August 23rd, the 2022 China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, and the Government of Guizhou Province, opened in Guiyang. It was physically and virtually attended by more than 2,400 representatives from China, ASEAN members, and countries along the Belt and Road. 2022 marks the 15th anniversary of the China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week. The theme of the week was “A Shared Effort to Build a Better Place, Promote Win-Win Cooperation and Embrace a Brighter Future”.

After the New Year, I embraced the summer in the southern hemisphere. Upon arriving in New Zealand, I encountered floods and storms. It was not smooth sailing when trying to get a phone card or a bank card, and I experienced many unlucky incidents. However, the landscapes I saw in New Zealand and the people I met were enough to heal everything.

It has been a month since I arrived in New Zealand. Life here is tranquil and the pace is slow, which allows me to calm down and truly appreciate and engage in things I want to do. The natural environment is excellent with beautiful scenery, blue skies, and white clouds everywhere.
