On May 14, 2024, Vice President Liu Weidong met with the delegation led by Rakhymzhan Rakhimov, Consul General of Kazakhstan in Shanghai, at the Minhang Campus. Representatives from the International Cooperation and Exchange Office and the Michigan College of SJTU attended the meeting.
Liu Weidong welcomed the Consul General and his delegation and provided a brief overview of SJTU’s basic situation in talent cultivation, scientific research capabilities, and internationalization efforts. He noted that Kazakhstan is a friendly neighbor of China and the birthplace of the Belt and Road Initiative. SJTU highly values its friendly cooperation with Kazakhstan and signed memoranda of understanding in 2018 with two top universities in Central Asia, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and Nazarbayev University.
Rakhimov Rakhymzhan expressed his honor to visit SJTU and praised the university's achievements in international exchange and cooperation. He hoped that both sides could explore deeper and more pragmatic cooperation in areas such as international student recruitment, joint research bases and overseas centers, and faculty exchanges. The Consulate General of Kazakhstan in Shanghai will continue to play its role as a bridge, promoting higher education exchanges and cultural cooperation between the two countries.
After the meeting, the Consul General and his delegation had a cordial exchange with Kazakhstani students studying at SJTU.
