International Affairs Division 2021-11-11 656

On November 10, the ‘Guangqi Observatory’ unveiling ceremony was held at the Science laboratory building. To serve the astronomical courses at SJTU and popularize astronomy, SJTU School of Physics and Astronomy started to build an observatory in December 2020 and finished construction in August 2021. It got its name ‘Guangqi Observatory’ during a name-seeking activity. Finally, the observatory is officially open to the public now.

Guangqi Observatory is located on the platform of the 8th story in No.5 New Sciences building in Minhang campus. The exterior is a 4-meter all-sky dome, and inside is a 40-cm Schmit-Cassegrain telescope which is an f/8 equatorial catadioptric telescope. With the Paramount ME II equatorometer, the telescope can point to the celestial objects at high precision. Furthermore, the telescope is equipped with a digital camera, charge-coupled device (CCD), and multi-waveband filters. This allows us to monitor various objects, such as the planets, transients, bright galaxies, nebulae, and stellar clusters in the distance.
