Jia Jinfeng and Zheng Hao's team has discovered segmented Fermi surfaces in superconductors

On the afternoon of April 12th, the research achievement "Experimental Verification of Segmented Fermi Surfaces in Superconducting State" by Jia Jinfeng and Zheng Hao’s team at Shanghai Jiao Tong University was announced. This achievement was selected as one of the "Top 10 Scientific Advances in China" for the year 2022 and marks Shanghai Jiao Tong University's return to the list after 11 years.

Academician Jia Jinfeng presented an overview of the achievements. He stated that this accomplishment is a result of years of accumulated work and continuous efforts by the team at the School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 2012, the team successfully fabricated the topological insulator/superconductor heterostructure, demonstrating that the system exhibits topological superconductivity and observing the long-sought Majorana zero modes within it. The current achievement represents a new phenomenon discovered within this system, which is the best reward for the team's ongoing research. Jia Jinfeng expressed gratitude to the country, the university, and the school for their long-term and continuous support to the team's work.

Professor Zheng Hao, on behalf of the team, presented an introduction to the research findings. He provided a detailed overview of the physical background, experimental process, research results, and academic significance of the "segmented Fermi surface" in the superconducting state. Professor Zheng expressed the team's future plans to explore the possibilities of constructing new types of topological superconductivity and achieving important physical effects such as superconducting diode effects using superconductors with a "segmented Fermi surface" as a platform.
