Integrated Design Dimensions——A profound exploration of design boundaries!

International Affairs Division 2025-06-17 29

Where there are boundaries, there are starting points.

Multiple dimensions intertwine, and ideas traverse between them.

Lines fold into planes, shapes grow into boundaries.

Not confined to form, not limited by boundaries.

The 2025 graduating class of 127 students, hailing from four undergraduate programs—Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Industrial Design, and Visual Communication Design—has studied and practiced in the Design Building, blending and growing together, constructing a real and fluid interdisciplinary space. Design serves as both a common language connecting them and as a way to reshape the world.

Event Introduction

The School of Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University is about to celebrate the glorious graduation of its 2025 undergraduate class. After four (or five) years of cultivation and refinement, these young minds have built a strong foundation in their respective disciplines. They have done this through classroom study, honed their design thinking in innovative practice, and broadened their global perspective through international exchange. With over a hundred design competition awards, dozens of patents, and cross-cultural project experiences, they embody the academic pursuit of "integrating knowledge with action."

The school has produced several standout students: several have published cutting-edge research in international journals, others have led teams to win Red Dot Design Awards, and others have demonstrated the power of design in rural revitalization and other examples of social practice. These stories of growth, rich in academic quality and humanistic attributes, serve as vivid examples of the school’s philosophy of drive through innovation, and integration through inner-disciplinary exchange. They set an inspiring example for future generations.

Design Concept

Design is not an answer but a way of traversing. "Design Dimensions" does not demarcate boundaries but sparks connections. Within these interwoven dimensions, we pose questions and seek pathways.

The exhibition’s main visual is derived from the floor plan of the Design Building, evolving into five graphic sets corresponding to the initials of the four disciplines:

Architecture

Landscape Architecture

Industrial Design

Visual Communication Design

Through geometric cuts, rotations, and reassembly, the graphics form a dynamic, open system, symbolizing the intersection, transformation, and co-creation among different disciplines.

Expanding from the main visual, the graduation exhibition features a range of merchandise, including Tyvek tote bags, metal pins, stickers, admission wristbands, guidebooks, invitations, certificates, coffee cup sleeves, and guest passes. The designs align with the exhibition’s aesthetic while offering both practicality and commemorative value.
