This June, the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC) announced the results of the 2023 Fellow selection, with Professor Tang Kexuan from the School of Agriculture and Biology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University being elected as a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences.
In December, following a vote by the Council of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Professor Tang Kexuan was elected as a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Class of Technical and Environmental Sciences. Professor Klaus Mainzer, the Dean, sent a congratulatory letter to Professor Tang Kexuan. This marks another prestigious honor for Professor Tang, following his earlier election as a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences in June of this year.
Professor Tang Kexuan has been involved in molecular biology and biotechnology research of medicinal plants. He has made significant contributions in the synthesis and regulation of natural plant products, such as artemisinin, in the field of medicinal plant molecular biology. He has successfully bred metabolically engineered varieties of Artemisia annua with high artemisinin content. Some of these varieties have been cultivated in Madagascar, the largest artemisinin-producing country in Africa. This development holds the potential to make Madagascar the second-largest artemisinin-producing country after China.
Professor Tang's work not only aligns with the "Belt and Road" initiative but also contributes to the global effort to eradicate malaria by providing a Chinese solution. His achievements represent a valuable contribution from China to the world.
