SJTU Hosts the 2024 Shanghai-Taiwan University Students Table Tennis Friendship Tournament

The "Drawing Youth, Welcoming the Olympics" 2024 Shanghai-Taiwan University Student Table Tennis Friendship Tournament was held at the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University on May 25.Eight table tennis teams from six universities across the Taiwan Strait, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, East China University of Science and Technology,Taiwan Tsing Hua University, Taiwan Cheng Kung University, Taiwan Chung Hsing University, and Taiwan Tamkang University, gathered at the Fok Ying Tung Sports Center. They competed in table tennis skills, promoted sportsmanship, strengthened emotional ties, and fostered spiritual harmony.

The Municipal Taiwan Affairs Office Deputy Director Yang Lihua, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Deputy Party Secretary and Vice President Hu Weiwei, leaders from the Municipal Taiwan Affairs Office, Municipal Table Tennis Association, and Minhang District Taiwan Affairs Office, along with professors and experts from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai University of Sport, and Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, attended the event.

The event specially invited ITTF Lifetime Honorary President Xu Yinsheng and world table tennis champions Shi Zhihao, Cao Yanhua, Ding Song, Wang Liqin, and Xu Xin to the scene to witness the competition alongside over 2,000 table tennis enthusiasts.

During the opening ceremony, Hu Weiwei, Yang Lihua, Wang Liqin, and Shi Zhihao delivered speeches, extending a warm welcome to guests and friends from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. They expressed hopes that young people from both sides would exchange, learn from each other, improve together, enhance understanding, deepen friendship, and wished the event a great success.

Before the competition, Xu Yinsheng, Shi Zhihao, Cao Yanhua, Ding Song, Wang Liqin, and Xu Xin interacted with university table tennis players from both sides of the strait through on-site coaching. They also presented signed paddles to the student representatives.

Spectators at the event visited the National Ball Culture Campus Exhibition, appreciating 80 precious items such as commemorative medals from the 1st World University Table Tennis Championships in 1973, a replica of ITTF President Montagu's manuscript on the founding of the ITTF, the Gao Xima table tennis set, replicas of World Table Tennis Championships trophies and medals, Olympic medals, early table tennis books, and sets. Through this exhibition, they learned about the history and stories of the artifacts and experienced the "ping-pong spirit" of China.

Chairman Xu Yinsheng and Xu Xin officiated the opening of the Shanghai-Taiwan University Student Table Tennis Friendship Tournament. The competition was lively and friendly, with student athletes from both sides full of spirit and determination. Their excellent skills and teamwork won rounds of applause from the audience. The matches featured not only intense competition but also mutual encouragement and support, showcasing the deep friendship between the youth on both sides of the strait. After a series of thrilling and fierce competitions, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University table tennis team emerged as the champion.

The Shanghai-Taiwan University Student Table Tennis Friendship Tournament not only injected new vitality into cross-strait sports exchanges but also built a new bridge of friendship between compatriots across the Taiwan Strait.
