SJTU Professor Fan Xianqun Selected as Fellow of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis

In September 2022, Professor Fan Xianqun, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Dean of the School of Medicine at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Director of the Ophthalmology Department at the Ninth People's Hospital, was elected as a Fellow of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI). The AOI is an international academy for ophthalmology.

On June 13, 2023, at the AOI Fellow Meeting held in Prague, Czech Republic, Professor Richard Abbott, the President of AOI and President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, presented Professor Fan Xianqun with the AOI Fellow Medal and certificate.

Professor Fan Xianqun, in his inaugural speech, shared his personal journey of growth and highlighted the illustrious history and remarkable achievements of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the School of Medicine at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Ninth People's Hospital. He showcased the latest research outcomes and diagnostic technologies in the field of ophthalmology and vision science from the ophthalmology team at the Ninth People's Hospital.

Professor Fan Xianqun expressed that his election as a Fellow of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI) is not only a recognition of his personal academic achievements but also a high acknowledgment of the development of ophthalmology in China, particularly in the field of orbital diseases and eye tumors. Looking towards the future, he expressed his anticipation for the AOI to further promote the advancement of global ophthalmology and visual health, contribute to the establishment of a global community for health and well-being, and make new and greater contributions to the health and well-being of humanity as a whole.

The Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI) was established in Belgium in 1975. It is a renowned international academic organization dedicated to providing the best ophthalmic education, fundamental research, and improved medical services for the protection of global vision health. The AOI restricts the number of Fellows to 100, and the selection process involves nomination and voting by existing Fellows. The basic requirements for Fellow nomination include a minimum of 20 years of engagement in the field of ophthalmology and the publication of over 100 articles or monographs. As of now, a total of 87 ophthalmic experts from 33 countries worldwide have been elected as Fellows of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis.

Professor Fan Xianqun has dedicated 35 years to clinical and research work in the field of ophthalmology, specializing in eye tumors and orbital diseases. He has developed new surgical techniques in oculoplastics to enhance the safety and effectiveness of orbital disease treatments. He has also made significant contributions in understanding the mechanisms of malignant eye tumors and established new surgical treatment models, thereby improving the preservation of eyes and survival rates in patients with eye tumors. He is recognized as a key pioneer in the field of eye tumors and orbital diseases in China.

As the principal investigator, Professor Fan has received the National Science and Technology Progress Award (second-class) and the He Liang He Li Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award twice. He has also been honored with the inaugural Innovators Award and the highest academic achievement award from the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. He has held positions such as the President of the Asia-Pacific Society of Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the President of the Asia-Pacific Ocular Oncology and Pathology Society.

Professor Fan Xianqun is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a member of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
