SJTU VEX Team Wins 2022-2023 VEX Robotics World Championship Skills Challenge

From April 27th to 29th, 2023, at the 2022-2023 VEX Robotics World Championship, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University VEX team demonstrated exceptional skills and achievements. They emerged as the overall champions in the Skills Challenge, champions in the Design division, and runners-up in the Finals of the Team Competition.

The championship took place in Dallas, Texas, USA. The competition featured over 80 university teams from more than 40 countries, including China, the United States, Canada, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. Prominent universities such as Purdue University, the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin from the United States, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University from China competed on the same stage.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University has made outstanding contributions to this World Championship, setting an example for teams from around the world and showcasing China's excellence. During the opening ceremony, Xiong Zhenhua, Secretary of the Party General Branch of the Student Innovation Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered a speech and received the prestigious annual Global Partner Award presented by the REC Foundation. Wu Ruixing, the captain of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University VEX team, appeared as the representative of the Chinese competitors and proudly waved the national flag.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University sent two teams to the competition, comprising undergraduate students from the JI, School of Mechanical Engineering and Power Engineering, School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, ParisTech-Elite Engineering School, and School of Naval Architecture, Ocean, and Civil Engineering. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University VEX teams achieved gold, silver, and bronze awards. They demonstrated exceptional design skills and won the Think Award. SJTU1 secured the championship in the Skills Challenge, while SJTU2 emerged as the Design Division champion in the Tournament and achieved second place in the Tournament Finals, as well as third place in the Skills Challenge.

During the closing ceremony, Shan Shiyuan, a member of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University VEX team, represented the entire team and gave an interview to share their competition experience and insights. Finally, the team's promotional video for this season was showcased on the big screen during the finals, conveying the voice of Shanghai Jiao Tong University to the world.

Behind the remarkable achievements of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University VEX teams lies the guidance and mentoring from their faculty advisors, Wu Shukun, Leng Chuntao, and the leaders of Xuechuang. It is the tireless dedication of the team members, their round-the-clock efforts, and their journey of growth from the national competition to the Asia Open and finally to the World Championship. Additionally, for this expedition to the World Championship in the United States, the teams received strong support from the Jiao Tong University Dallas Alumni Association and Lenovo Group.

The Shanghai Jiao Tong University Student Innovation Center, as a platform for innovative practical education, provides students with professional and comfortable laboratory facilities, comprehensive and thoughtful engineering services, and all-round support. It actively creates a robotics research and practice platform, and through competition-driven robot innovation education, it contributes to the cultivation of innovative talents for the country.

 

Introduction to the Competition

The VEX Robotics World Championship, often referred to as the "Olympics" of robotics competitions, is organized by the Robotics Education and Competition (REC) Foundation in the United States. It is a global robotics competition that welcomes participants from elementary school to university level. It is the largest and most participated robotics competition in the world, representing the highest international standard for educational robotics competitions.

The competition is divided into five categories: VEX IQ Elementary School, IQ Middle School, EDR Middle School, EDR High School, and VEX U (University). Each category has its own set of challenges and competitions. The VEX U category, also known as VEX University, is exclusively for college students aged 18 and above. It tests the participants' ability to apply flexible technical skills and mental resilience in robotics.
