School of Mechanical Engineering Celebrates 110th Anniversary

On the morning of November 18th, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Mechanical Engineering held a grand ceremony to commemorate its 110th anniversary. Leaders, guests, and individuals from various sectors, along with more than 4,000 faculty, students, and alumni of the school, gathered together to review the century-long educational journey and look forward to a promising future.

The 11th and 12th Vice Chairmen of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, former Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League Yan Junqi, Party Secretary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Yang Zhenbin, former Party Secretaries Wang Zongguang and Ma Dexiu, former Presidents Xie Shengwu, Zhang Jie, and Lin Zhongqin, former Director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and former Executive Vice Secretary of the University Su Ming, former Vice Secretaries Tao Aizhu and Pan Guoli, former Vice Presidents Fan Zude, Sheng Huanye, and Huang Zhen, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Zhang Ansheng, Vice Secretary Lin Litao, Full-time Deputy Director of the University Affairs Committee Wu Dan, and other former leaders and current leaders, including Academician Xie Youbai from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician Ding Han from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Xu Qing from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as guests from cooperating and donating units attended the commemorative ceremony. Representatives from administrative departments, colleges, various alumni, retired teachers, and current faculty and students also participated in the celebration of the 110th anniversary.

The School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University can be traced back to the establishment of the Electrical Machinery Department in 1913. It is one of the earliest institutions in China to conduct mechanical engineering education. Over the past century, with a commitment to national needs, the school pioneered various specialties and disciplines such as automotive engineering, aircraft engineering, lifting and transportation machinery, turbines, internal combustion engines, vibration and noise, and robotics. It has trained over 36,000 undergraduate students and 24,000 postgraduate students.

The school has produced more than 50 academicians, including prominent figures such as the eminent scientist Qian Xuesen, the pioneer of "Two Bombs, One Satellite" Wang Xiji, and the recipient of the "National Highest Science and Technology Award" Gu Songfen. Faculty and alumni have been involved in significant projects, including the design and construction of the first automatic escalator, the first 10,000-ton ship, the first nuclear power plant (Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant), the first sounding rocket, the first missile, and the first artificial satellite in China, contributing significantly to the development of higher education, industrial construction, and national defense.

In 2002, the School of Power and Energy Engineering and the School of Mechanical Engineering merged to form today’s School of Mechanical Engineering. Positioned as "Distinctively Chinese, World-Class," the school adheres to an internationalized approach to education. It has cultivated a culture characterized by scientific pragmatism, outstanding innovation, and harmonious progress, becoming one of the most influential schools at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and nationwide.

 

School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering celebrates 20th anniversary

On October 22nd, the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean, and Civil Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University celebrated its 20th anniversary, along with the 80th anniversary of the discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. The commemorative ceremony was held with great solemnity, bringing together leaders at various levels, distinguished guests from various sectors, alumni from different years, as well as faculty and students of the school. Together, they reminisced about their student days, reviewed the academic journey, looked forward to the demands of the era, and discussed plans for future development.

Students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University celebrated the 20th anniversary of its School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering with creative designs of boats and submarine robot.

A foldable boat that can be put into a pocket, an unmanned ship powered completely by ocean wave energy, a robot that can mine on demand 6,000 meters under water, an unmanned air and sea amphibious vehicle ... these are some of the students' designs displayed at an innovation fair launched on Saturday at the Minhang Campus of the university.

The exhibits are the latest achievements of the school in encouraging student innovation.

The school has been dedicated in cultivating innovative talent, with all undergraduates involved in science and technology innovation programs.

Its students have won more than 800 awards in city-level or national innovation competitions, including at least nine top prizes in national events.

 

School of Oceanography celebrates 5th anniversary

On October 29th, Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Oceanography celebrated its fifth anniversary, along with the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Ocean Research Institute. The commemorative ceremony was held with great solemnity, bringing together leaders at various levels, distinguished guests from various sectors, alumni from different years, as well as faculty and students of the school. Together, they participated in the grand event, shared memories, and collectively envisioned the future.

Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) academicians Su Jilan, Mu Mu, Li Lin, Wang Huijun, Zhang Renhe, Chen Dake, Huang Jianping, CAS academicians Jin Xianglong, Li Jiabiao from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Kai-Uwe Hinrichs from the German Academy of Sciences, international Eurasian Academy of Sciences academicians Sun Song, Li Manchun, foreign correspondent academician Cheng Hai from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Consul General of Norway in Shanghai Lise Nordgaard, Li Tiegang, Director of the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Fang Yinxia, Director of the Second Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Liu Shunlin, Director of the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration, Peng Xiaotong, Party Secretary of the Institute of Deep Sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Cheng Jie, Party Secretary of the South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Zhou Weixin, Party Secretary of the 702nd Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, Qin Weijia, former Director of the Polar Research Office of the State Oceanic Administration, Liu Baohua, former Party Secretary of the National Deep Sea Base Management Center, Xie Wenlan, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, renowned performing artist Qiao Zhen, pianist Kong Xiangdong, as well as invited guests from cooperative units and sister universities, attended the ceremony. Also present were Yang Zhenbin, Party Secretary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, former Party Secretary Ma Dexiu, former President and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Lin Zhongqin, Vice President Xi Lifeng, Wu Dan and Weng Zhenping, Deputy Directors of the University Council, representatives from various departments, sister colleges, and affiliated units of the university, as well as representatives of faculty and students, totaling more than 300 people.

Since its establishment, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has always been closely linked to the fate of the nation and humanity. In order to further serve the national strategy of becoming a maritime power and contribute to the construction of the Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Center, the university has proposed the "Great Ocean" strategy. This strategy involves gathering various advantages to establish the Ocean College, the Ocean Equipment Research Institute, and coordinate the construction of the "Great Ocean" research platform. The fruitful achievements of the Ocean College in the five years since its establishment fully demonstrate its strength and potential. The university hopes that the college will carry forward the spirit of SJTU, cultivate more leading talents in the field of oceanography who are rooted in China and have a global perspective, and make greater contributions to the development of the maritime industry.

 

School of International and Public Affairs Celebrates 20th anniversary

On the morning of October 21, 2023, the 20th-anniversary celebration ceremony of the School of International and Public Affairs took place at the Wen Zhi Hall on the Xuhui campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The event was attended by over 700 participants, including experts and scholars from more than 60 universities and research institutions nationwide, key figures from the government and business sectors, alumni representatives working in various fields, representatives from cooperating and donating units, as well as leaders and representatives from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The distinguished guests included Li Baorong, President of the Chinese Association of Administrative Management; Xue Lan, Co-Chair of the Public Management Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Senior Professor at Tsinghua University, and Dean of the Tsinghua University School of Public Policy and Management; Ding Kuiling, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and other leaders and representatives from the university.

The ceremony aimed to celebrate the two decades of growth and development of the School of International and Public Affairs, bringing together a diverse group of individuals who have contributed to the success and achievements of the school over the years.

After two decades of development, the school has achieved remarkable results in academic disciplines. The Public Management discipline was rated as a Class A discipline in the fourth round of discipline assessment by the Ministry of Education, achieving an outstanding A rating in the national MPA school assessment for the first time. In the QS World University Subject Rankings, the Social Policy and Administration discipline has been consistently ranked in the top 100 over the past five years. In the Times Higher Education China Subject Rating, the Political Science discipline received an A rating for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022, while the Public Management discipline received an A rating in 2022.

In the ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities by Broad Subject Fields, the Public Management discipline entered the top 200 for the first time in 2022, ranking fifth among domestic universities. The Political Science discipline has been in the top 400 for two consecutive years, ranking 9th in 2021 and 10th in 2022 among domestic universities. In the Best Chinese Universities Ranking by Subject, the Administration Management specialty ranked 6th in 2021, 7th in 2022, and 3rd in 2023. The academic reputation of the Public Management and Political Science disciplines continues to rise both domestically and internationally.
