Egemen Ertugrul (Chinese name: Zhuge Yang), a Turkish graduate student enrolled in 2018 at SJTU School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, one of the top eight contestants at the final of the 2nd China University Students VRAR Developer Competition and winner of the Best VR Application Award, and receiver of the 2019-2020 scholarship for excellent international students in China

Thomas Yuanke Phillipe Xiong, the great-great-grandson of famous Chinese mathematician Xiong Qinglai (1893-1969), started his undergraduate studies at the Paris Elite Institute of Technology (Ecole d'Ingénieurs Paris) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in 2017, and went to pursue a master's degree in energy and power engineering from SJTU in 2021.

Cheng Lin Pua (潘政麟) is a Malaysian student majoring in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Mechanical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He won the Shanghai Government Scholarship , third prize of the 7th China National College Students Competition on Energy Economy and also SJTU Mechanical Senior Design Project Excellent Prize 2022. He was a member of the Malaysian Alumni Association in Shanghai, and a member of the presidium of the International Students Association of the School of Mechanical Engineering. He has written 10 academic papers/publications, one book and more than 130 articles.

Gianluca Salvicchi is an Italian student of the Master of Finance program at Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He came to the university in 2017, majoring in electronic information, but unfortunately he had to abort his studies in Shanghai because of family reasons. After completing a bachelor's degree in economics at Luiss Guido Carli in Rome, Gianluca came back to the SJTU for a master's degree in finance.

Daniela Mata from Peru is an undergraduate student majoring in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan - Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) at the Minhang campus of SJTU in Shanghai. She was admitted to JI in 2019 and is expected to graduate in August 2023. Mata is also pursuing a dual bachelor’s degree program with UM in Aerospace Engineering. She regards herself as a hardworking, enthusiastic, passionate and friendly person with hobbies that include travelling, exploring cultures and tasting food. 

Kyung-hyun Youn is a South Korean student who enrolled in the program of Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) at the School of Humanities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in 2021. He was a winner of the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. After obtaining his bachelor's degrees in chemical engineering and mathematics education in South Korea, Youn worked as a mathematics teacher in the country for two years. From 2019 to 2021, he attended the Chinese language course at the School of Humanities.

Zadorozhna Oleksandra, also known as Wang Shasha in Chinese, is an international student at the School of Humanities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a recipient of the Chinese Government Scholarship.

Syrous Irani is a postgraduate of Grade 2020 of the School of Life Science and Biotechnology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is the winner of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Chinese Government Scholarships for outstanding international students in China, an outstanding international undergraduate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the chairman of the 8th international students association of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a volunteer in the international youth rescue alliance.

Azharuddin Chachar is a Pakistani student currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Environmental Science & Engineering at the School of Environmental Science & Engineering (SESE) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Shanghai, China. He received his master’s degree in Environmental Engineering at SESE of SJTU. He has spent more than five years at SJTU. He won the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Scholarship for his excellent academic performance in his postgraduate studies. He has attended various international workshops and conferences in China and abroad (Korea University, Seoul, South Korea). He has also published a few high-level research articles as a postgraduate student.

Usman Ghani is a Ph.D. student at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He has published ten research articles in high-impact journals throughout his five-year doctoral studies. As a scholarship fellow, he received sponsorship from the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). Besides his excellent academic performance, he is also an overseas goodwill ambassador for the SJTU graduate admission programs abroad. He loves books and uses the pseudonym “Shehab” in his writing of poetry and prose. Traveling, social work, sports, and cooking are some of his other passions.

Luke Johnston is a fourth-year British student at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He is now pursuing a doctoral degree in statistics and his academic orientation is to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and statistical knowledge with the diagnosis of cancer. Apart from publishing one research paper in Cancer Science and two research papers in Frontiers Genetics, he is an honoree of Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship and won first prize in the 2022 "Generation-Z Shanghai Stories" Short Video Contest. In addition, he is committed to presenting a real picture of China to the world as seen through the eyes of a foreigner.

Soe Lei May, whose Chinese name is Zhao Xiufang, was born in the city of Yangon in Myanmar. She attained the best scores in the university matriculation examination at high school and was awarded a district prize for her achievements. She is pursuing dentistry at Shanghai Jiao Tong University as a freshman this year, and has been granted the Shanghai Government Scholarship Type-B to support her studies in China.

Khor Whye Wei, a Malaysian whose Chinese name is Xu Huaiwei, began to pursue his undergraduate studies at the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in 2021.

Marijana Stojanovic is a Serbian student, who received a master’s degree in translation from the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). She worked as an intern for the Serbian government and was then employed by the China Railway Construction Corporation Limited and the China Railway Design Corporation (CRDC). Currently, Stojanovic is working for the Serbian office of Haitian International. She has rich translating experience and her clients include Tencent, KPMG, Financial Times, Da-Jiang Innovations, Schneider Electric, Air China and DFS Group Limited.

Noah Andrea Namwamba is a Kenyan postgraduate of the School of Media and Communication of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He is working on his PhD. He served as a translator for the president of Kenya at the China International Import Expo and delivered a speech at the first World Youth Development Forum in 2022. 

In 1997, I emigrated to Canada with my family. Since receiving a degree in economics from the University of British Columbia in 2011, I have worked in the real estate industry. During my years working in real estate, I was very lucky to meet and build relationships with many Chinese immigrants. I always found it extremely interesting to hear stories about China while talking with my clients. They shared their experiences with me and told me various stories. The more I learned, the more my curiosity grew. Therefore, when an opportunity presented itself in 2019 to apply for the IMBA program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, I took the plunge.

João Graça Gomes from Portugal is a research and development engineer at the Sino-Portuguese Centre for New Energy Technologies (SCNET). He received his master’s degree in energy and power engineering from the China-UK Low Carbon College (LCC) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and another master’s degree in energy and environmental engineering from the University of Lisbon (ULisboa).

Pierre Guy Atangana Njock is a Cameroonian with a doctoral degree in civil engineering in the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Civil Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He was one of the SJTU Excellent International Post-graduate Students (2021). He has earned numerous awards: an A-class Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship, best speech at the 2nd "Study in China" Forum for International Doctoral Students, best paper at the GeoShanghai 2018 International Conference, and a 2013-2014 friendship award from Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT).

Abraham Zamcheck (American) obtained his bachelor’s degree in East Asian Studies and Master's degree in Urban Planning from Harvard. He has another Master’s degree in Logistical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Supervised by Ruan Xing, dean and Guangqi Chair professor, Abraham is now a PhD student at the School of Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). His research focuses on historical architecture and planning in late imperial and modern China as well as modular construction, and supply chain/logistics. He plans to research and lecture about the history, form, and applications of vernacular Chinese architecture and planning as well as the history of Chinese art, architecture and gardens to the international audience.

Seungyeon Yang is a South Korean student at University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter), majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. She is president of the JI International Student Association and takes charge of the financial work at the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (IEEE-TEMS) Student Branch of the JI Center for Entrepreneurship. Seungyeon Yang considers herself an outgoing person; she likes to try new things, and is very interested in management and entrepreneurship.

Daria, a Russian girl studying foreign languages, received her bachelor’s degree at Heilongjiang University in Harbin, Heilongjiang province. After working as a translator in a Chinese company in Moscow, she decided to pursue a higher degree at Shanghai Jiao Tong University where she did well in her studies and participated in many volunteer activities. She received the Yang Yongman Scholarship of SJTU for the 2017-2018 academic year. Daria took up an internship when she participated in the Silk Road International Film Festival in 2017 and contributed to the cultural exchange between China and Russia.
