Shanghai Jiao Tong University Establishes School of Psychology

On April 7, the establishment ceremony of the School of Psychology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was held at the Xuhui Campus. The event was attended by over 200 guests, including Shanghai Vice Mayor Xie Dong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Municipal Government Wang Ping, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Sun Zhenrong, SJTU Party Secretary Yang Zhenbin, President and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Ding Kuiling, Deputy Party Secretary Lin Litao, Executive Deputy Director of the University Council Gu Feng, relevant experts and scholars, representatives from sister universities, heads of relevant departments, and faculty representatives. The ceremony was hosted by Lin Litao.

In his speech, Yang Zhenbin expressed heartfelt gratitude for the strong support from all sectors of society, extended a sincere welcome to the attending leaders and experts, and warmly congratulated the establishment of the school. He emphasized that the establishment of the School of Psychology is a significant practice for SJTU to better serve the construction of a "Healthy China" and a "Safe China," align with Shanghai's three leading industrial development tasks, and promote cutting-edge research in psychology and related disciplines. He looks forward to the school further leveraging the university's disciplinary and comprehensive advantages, highlighting the "Psychology + AI" feature, producing a series of internationally influential original major achievements, and continuously advancing towards the goal of building a world-class psychology discipline to contribute SJTU's wisdom to the modernization of China.

Lin Chongde, a senior professor at Beijing Normal University and former president of the Chinese Psychological Society, sent a congratulatory letter, expressing his congratulations and expectations for the development of the school. Qiao Zhihong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Faculty of Psychology at Beijing Normal University, read the congratulatory letter.

In the presence of the attending guests, Xie Dong, Wang Ping, Yang Zhenbin, and Ding Kuiling jointly unveiled the plaque for the School of Psychology.

Fu Xiaolan, former director of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was appointed the first dean of the School of Psychology. In her report on the construction of the school, she stated that the school will focus on clinical and health psychology, brain and cognitive science, and management and social psychology, highlighting the SJTU feature of "Psychology + Artificial Intelligence." The school will focus on solving major real-world problems in the country and society, with "innovation" as the core and "quality" as the key, constantly updating and constructing a talent cultivation system that meets the requirements of the new era, creating a first-class practical teaching platform, and setting up interdisciplinary talent training programs to contribute wisdom and strength to national and social development.

Following the establishment ceremony, the School of Psychology held its first academic report meeting. The academic exchange was hosted by Gu Feng.

In his speech at the academic report meeting, Ding Kuiling emphasized that psychology should not only be combined with medicine but also deeply integrated with management, economics, and artificial intelligence. He stressed the importance of using interdisciplinary integration as a "catalyst" to reduce the "activation energy" of technological innovation and increase the "output rate" of innovative results. He pointed out that mental health has become a major issue of public concern and social focus, and the school should closely revolve around the fundamental task of moral education, strengthening students' mental health education and ideological guidance to cultivate more well-rounded and morally upright pillars of society for the country.

Su Yanjie, professor at Peking University and president of the Chinese Psychological Society, You Xuequn, president of Shaanxi Normal University, Jiang Yi, deputy director (in charge) of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhou Xiaolin, dean of the School of Psychology at East China Normal University, gave speeches during the academic exchange.

Experts such as Wang Zhen, deputy director of the Shanghai Mental Health Center, researcher Tang Yingying, Yuan Tifei, executive dean of the Brain Health Institute, associate researcher Zhang Ruyuan, and Zhang Xinan, Party Secretary of the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, delivered keynote speeches on the theme of "Psychology + AI," covering topics like "Exploration of Clinical Psychology in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," "Exploration of Integrated Upgrading of Mental Imaging Diagnosis and Treatment with the Help of Artificial Intelligence," "Some Progress and Thoughts on Brain Function Regulation," "Quantitative Comparison of Artificial Intelligence and Human Brain Intelligence," and "Leadership in the Age of Artificial Intelligence."
