Jiao Licheng, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the then Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in 1982 and serves as a professor at the School of Artificial Intelligence of Xidian University, was elected Foreign Member of Academia Europaea.

Jiao Licheng: Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the then Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of SJTU in 1982, Vice Chairman of Shaanxi Alumni Association, and professor and doctoral supervisor at Xidian University, focusing primarily on intelligent sensing and computing, image understanding and object identification, and deep learning and neuromorphic computing, nurtured a number of people who have become scholars, experts or industry leaders, such as those listed in or nominated for the top 100 Chinese scholars, IEEE Fellow, Chief Scientist of China’s 973 Project, Cheung Kong Scholar, leading scholar in China’s national Ten Thousand Talents Plan, Chief Scientist of Jingdong Finance, Chief Technology Officer of SenseTime and strategic expert of the Alibaba DAMO Academy.

Over the past 30 years and more, the Cheung Kong Scholars innovation team led by Jiao has proposed the immune evolution and optimization framework and the co-evolution and co-optimization framework based on in-depth studies in optimization and learning in nonlinear, multiscale non-structured intelligent information processing, put forward the concept and theory of the high-dimensional multiscale singularity detection for the problems in interpreting the remote-sensing images with complicated application and successfully applied it to the interpretation and processing of complicated images, and developed a system for neuromorphic interpretation of remote-sensing images based on big data and China’s first neuromorphic SAR system.

Jiao’s research outcomes include the China Youth Science and Technology Award, the National Second Prize for Natural Sciences and more than a dozen first or higher prizes for science and technology at the provincial/ministerial level, and over 20 monographs with the h-index at 85, such as Theory of Neural Network System, the first of its kind published in China, Immune Optimization Algorithm, Learning and Recognition, Image Multiscale Geometric Analysis Theory and Application, and Deep Learning, Optimization and Recognition. Jiao is also a member of the Academic Discipline Appraisal Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of China’s State Council and an expert of the Appraisal Group of the Postdoctor Management Committee of China’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and was a deputy to the 8th National People’s Congress. He has been granted special government allowance from the State Council, and named in the list of talents for China’s Million and Ten Million Talents Project, the list of teachers as role models in China, the list of experts who have made prominent contribution in Shaanxi Province and the list of teachers as role models in Shaanxi Province. He won the WU Wenjun AI Science and Technology Award, and was elected Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

Being a member of Academia Europaea is one of the highest international academic honors that a scholar can be granted.
