11 Scholars from Shanghai Jiao Tong University Win the "Ruiyuan Science and Technology Award"

The commemorative ceremony for the 128th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University took place at the Huo Yingdong Sports Center on the Minhang Campus. During the event, the second Shanghai Jiao Tong University "Ruiyuan Science and Technology Award" and the inaugural "Ruiyuan Youth Science and Technology Award" were ceremoniously announced. Following global nominations and evaluations by the judging panel, the second "Ruiyuan Science and Technology Award" was awarded to five individuals: Ji Xiangdong, Huang Zhen, Mei Hong, Xu Qing, and He Lin, all from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The first "Ruiyuan Youth Science and Technology Award" recipients included Li Tingxin/Liu Xiaoxue (joint recipients), Gu Guoying, Zeng Zheng, Wang Hongdong, Yu Shanhe, and Liu Shen, all young scientists from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

"Ruiyuan Science and Technology Award" - Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Recipient: Ji Xiangdong

Position: Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Lee Shau Kee Institute and Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland

Achievements: Made significant contributions to understanding strong interactions and fundamental properties of dark matter. Discovered the composition and summation rules of proton spins, proposed a generalized parton distribution function to describe hadron structures, and pioneered experimental measurement methods. Initiated and led the PandaX experiment to achieve the most sensitive international measurements of dark matter "brightness."

"Ruiyuan Science and Technology Award" - Engineering and Materials Sciences

Recipient: Huang Zhen

Position: Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Dean of the State Power Investment Corporation Smart Energy Innovation Institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Achievements: Proposed engine fuel design and combustion control methods, providing new approaches for efficient and clean combustion in engines. Pioneered key technologies for dimethyl ether, biodiesel, and natural gas engines, applied in automotive and marine power. Created advanced synthetic fuel technologies for heavy-duty power, contributing significantly to achieving net-zero carbon emissions in maritime and automotive power systems.

"Ruiyuan Science and Technology Award" - Information and Space Sciences

Recipient: Mei Hong

Position: Ph.D. alumnus of the 1992 Computer Science and Engineering Department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor at Peking University

Achievements: Proposed the theory of lifecycle software architecture modeling, significantly improving the efficiency, quality, and evolution of software development. Developed the "black-box" interoperability technology and platform, overcoming data acquisition and analysis bottlenecks in information silos. Achieved innovative software technology breakthroughs in open network environments, providing widely applicable solutions for major national big data projects.

Recipient: Xu Qing

Position: 1982 alumnus of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chief Scientist and Chief Designer at China Shipbuilding Group Limited's 701st Research Institute

Achievements: Chief designer for China's third-generation frigates and fourth-generation destroyers, pioneering innovative achievements in ship overall design, combined propulsion, and combat system integration technologies. Made significant contributions to enhancing China's naval equipment system construction, surpassing world-leading levels, and achieving cross-generational development of destroyers and frigates.

Recipient: He Lin

Position: Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Honorary Dean of the Bio-X Research Institute

Achievements: Dedicated to medical genetics research, he solved longstanding mysteries in genetics, establishing the world's largest repository of mental and neurological disease samples. Promoted genetic counseling system construction in China, making significant contributions to genetic research and development nationally and globally.

Achievements: Made significant contributions in the field of low-dimensional quantum materials, particularly in the novel quantum states of two-dimensional materials such as moiré superlattices. Experimentally observed conclusive evidence of fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect, providing new opportunities for topological quantum computing research.

Position: Distinguished Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Achievements: Made original contributions in modeling actuation mechanisms of soft robots, structural optimization design, and nonlinear control. Invented numerous novel configurations and motion performance of bio-inspired soft robots, contributing significantly to the development of soft robotics discipline.

Recipient: Zeng Zheng

Position: Associate Researcher at the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Achievements: Successfully developed the "Nezha" series of cross-domain navigators for "sky-sea integration," completed the full-process trial in real marine environments, and achieved breakthroughs in deep-sea operations beyond 100 meters. Pioneered the "surfing algorithm," solving industry challenges of cross-domain emergence under joint wind and wave disturbances, providing innovative platforms for applications like sea-air stereoscopic observation and cross-media communication.

Recipient: Wang Hongdong

Position: Associate Researcher at the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Achievements: Continuously broke through key technologies in intelligent control of vessels, applied to multiple unmanned vessels, and completed China's first autonomous long-distance sailing over 100 kilometers. Applied achievements in the construction of the country's first batch of intelligent vessel testing grounds, supporting the testing and verification of intelligent navigation systems for multiple vessels, contributing young talents to national maritime security needs.

Position: Researcher at Ruijin Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine

Achievements: Elucidated the training immunity and plasticity of monocytes as key immunological mechanisms regulating the development of major infectious diseases and tumor immune escape. Enriched and expanded the theory system of innate immunity, providing important theoretical basis and intervention strategies for clinical immunotherapy of infectious diseases and leukemia.

Recipient: Liu Shen

Position: Professor and Deputy Director of Orthopedics at the Sixth People's Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (National Orthopedic Medical Center)

Achievements: Addressed the treatment "no man's land" of tendon adhesion, first devising an anti-inflammatory strategy using bio-inspired sympathetic nerve signal electrical stimulation. Revealed the key cascade amplification mechanism of adhesion formation, developed a series of patented new technologies, and improved clinical efficacy, providing important theoretical basis and new therapies for clinical treatment.
