Shanghai Jiao Tong University Alumnus Xia Zhiyong Elected as Member of the National Academy of Engineering

On February 6, 2024, Washington, D.C. time, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced the 2023 class of new members. A total of 114 new members and 21 international members were elected, including Xia Zhiyong, a 1987 alumnus of the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Xia Zhiyong, a distinguished engineer and Director of Hardware Engineering at Apple Inc., received dual bachelor's degrees in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and Computer Science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1987. He obtained his master's and doctoral degrees in Engineering Science from Harvard University in 1992 and 1994, respectively. In 1995, he joined the Research and Innovation Center of Ford Motor Company as a technical expert, later becoming the Technical Director responsible for research and development of automotive materials, manufacturing, and simulation technologies. In 2014, he joined Apple Inc., leading the research and development of product simulation and machine learning to support the design and manufacturing of iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Vision Pro, and future revolutionary products. His research areas include mechanics, materials, manufacturing, and simulation. Throughout his 30-year career in the automotive and consumer electronics industries, he has made significant contributions in numerous fields. Xia Zhiyong has long held leadership positions in companies and professional associations. He has published over 100 academic papers, edited/co-edited seven technical books/journals/conference collections, and holds 25 patents and two trade secrets.

Xia Zhiyong is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). He has received the SAE Henry Ford II Distinguished Award (2005), the SAE/AISI Sydney H. Melbourne Award (2009), the SAE Forest R. McFarland Award (2011), the ASME Distinguished Service Award (2013), the STLE Best Paper Award in Interface Engineering (2014), and Ford's highest honor, the Henry Ford Technology Award, three times (2005, 2009, and 2011).

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected 114 new members and 21 international members, announced NAE President John L. Anderson today.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

Individuals in the newly elected class will be formally inducted during the NAE's annual meeting on Sept. 29, 2024.
