Semester Exchange Program

The Semester Exchange Program attracts students from our partner universities who wish to study at SJTU for one or two semesters. To be an exchange student, candidates must be officially nominated by their home university.​

Program coordinator from partner universities will nominate students in the nomination system. Nominees will receive an application link through which they can complete the online applications.​

Soft reminder: Please do not use Gmail & Hotmail as your nomination and sign-in email. IE and Chrome are recommenced for online application.​

SPRING Semester: February 2026 – June 2026
  • The registration date is generally the Friday before the semester begins.
  • The last two weeks are exam weeks, and the exam schedule will depend on the specific courses.
  • Please note that the UM-SJTU Joint Institute has its own Academic Calendar
2. NOMINATION & APPLICATION

2.1 Eligibility

√ A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
√ HSK 5 at least for attending the Chinese Taught Course (Original test certificate required).
√ IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 90 for attending English Taught Courses (Original test certificate not required. No requirement for native speakers).
√ Must be a full-time, matriculated student in one of SJTU's exchange partner institutions.
√ Have completed at least two semesters of study at home university to commencing the exchange period.
√ Non-Chinese citizen.

2.2 Nomination & Application Procedure

  • A login password to the Online Application Portal has been provided to the exchange coordinators. The nomination link is:http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn/partner/c.asp?action=partner_sign
  • Exchange coordinators shall fill in nominees' information accordingly.
To ensure the accuracy of the visa application materials, it is essential that the Exchange coordinators verifies the nominee's information at the time of nomination, especially the student's first and last names, which must match exactly as they appear on the passport, as name information cannot be changed later.
  • Upon successful nomination, students will receive a link to the Online Application Portal via email.
  • Nominated students should log in to the system and apply before the application deadline. The application guide can click here.
To ensure the accuracy of the visa application materials, students should confirm that they have completely filled out all information on the application form, such as passport number, date of birth, and so on.
  • Once the application is approved, the students will get the results via email.

*There is no fixed template. Students can fill in the courses they are interested in. The application form will be submitted to the school for review. It is recommended that students list courses from the respective school in their study plan. The study plan is for the reference of the reviewing faculty and does not represent the final courses available for selection. Students must be flexible in their course choices, which will be based on the notifications from each school.

3. PROGRAMS & COURSES

More than 30 schools/departments at SJTU which are open to university-level exchange students to choose. Exchange students coming to our university need to be admitted by a specific school. Once admitted, they can only choose courses from that school. If they wish to select courses from another school, they must obtain prior approval from the relevant faculty.

Due to limitations in the language of instruction and course capacity at our university, we need the students to be flexible in their course selection.

For the most updated information about majors and courses, please consult with the School / Department. Course selection is subject to the school's notification.

3.2 Restricted Programs and Courses

  • All courses from the School of Medicine and Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance are not available to university-level exchange students.
  • School of Electronics, Information and Electrical Engineering (SEIEE) The number of vacancies for courses is highly limited due to the current capacity issue. As such, to avoid the situation where your students are unable to successfully enrol in any computer science courses, we recommend that you refrain from nominating students to SEIEE.
  • Some schools, such as the School of International and Public Affairs/KoGuan Law School etc ., do not offer undergraduate courses taught in English.If you choose these schools, you can select the English-taught graduate programs offered by the school.
  • Not all graduate courses are available to undergraduate exchange students, and vice versa.

UM-SJTU Joint Institute

  • SPEIT offers three engineering majors: Information Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Energy and Power Engineering. For more detailed information, please visit the website.
  • If you are keen on enrolling in courses at SPEIT, please select SPEIT as your first preference in the application form.Courses are available for selection only by students of this college.You can find a preliminary course list HERE.
School of Humanities--Intensive Chinese Language Program
  • This program is a Chinese language learning program that will provide different levels of Chinese language classes based on your proficiency. The courses include listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The classes are held at the Xuhui campus.
  • Please note that the School of Humanities has its own course selection system for the Intensive Chinese Language program.
  • - Course selection for the Internsive Chinese Language Program is subject to notifications from the School of Humanities.
School of Mechanical Engineering
  • The history of the School of Mechanical Engineering (ME) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) dates back to 1913. Over the past century, the school has cultivated tens of thousands of graduates who made significant contributions to technological development and economic growth in the world, such as scientists, engineers, educators, statesmen and entrepreneurs. Antai College of Economics and Management (ACEM)
  • There are no major restrictions for undergraduate exchange students. Undergraduate exchange students are eligible to choose from all English-taught undergraduate courses offered during the semester. If your Chinese proficiency meets the required level (native speaker proficiency or at least HSK 5 equivalent), you may also select from the available Chinese-taught courses, based on your individual language abilities.
  • Graduate exchange students are eligible to select courses from the Master of International Business (MIB) program offered during the semester. (This applies only to regular graduate exchange students and does not apply to MBA exchange students, which is operated separately.)

School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE)
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is pioneering in setting up the discipline of Materials Science and Engineering in China, which has been composed of departments of materials science and engineering since 1997 and among which the heat treatment major was set up in 1952. The discipline of 'Materials Science and Engineering' is one of the first national first-degree subjects and has been consistently ranked top 1‰ in ESI.

  • School of Agriculture and Biology offers four majors: Plant Science, Animal Science, Resources and Environment, and Food Science and Engineering.

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics

School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology
  • As a leading institution in life sciences and biotechnology education and research, School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology (SLSB) boasts two first-level disciplines, encompassing a wide range of sub-disciplines including Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Developmental Biology, Cell Biology, Bioinformatics, and Bioengineering. China-UK Low Carbon College
  • The Low Carbon College (LCC) is a joint initiative between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Edinburgh, dedicated to advancing research and education in low-carbon fields. As the first college in China to pioneer low-carbon research and education, LCC offers three master’s programs: Low Carbon Environment, Low Carbon Energy, and Hydrogen Energy & Energy Storage.

School of Media and Communication
  • The School of Media and Communication boasts a high degree of internationalization, with over 200 international graduate students enrolled throughout the year, hailing from more than 50 countries around the globe, including world-renowned universities.
  • Our institution is structured into three departments: Journalism & Communication, Film & Television, and Cultural Industry Management. Each department offers a range of programs at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels, catering to diverse academic interests and career aspirations.

4. PREPARATION BEFORE ARRIVAL

All electronic materials, including admission letters and visa forms, will be sent to the student's email address directly. We only provide electronic copies of the admission materials, and the paper version of the admission notice can be collected when the student registers for enrollment.

4.1 Visa application

All students are required to apply for a Student Visa (X visa) at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your country with their passport, admission notice and visa application for study in China. Please contact the local Embassy or Consulate for more information.

4.3 Accommodation

Due to the limited number of dormitories, on-campus accommodation is not guaranteed. Accommodation booking notifications will be sent along with the admission materials. In case of failure to reserve an on-campus room, or if you plan to live off-campus, the average rent for one-room lodging in the campus neighborhood is 3,000 RMB per month for the Minhang Campus and 5,000 RMB per month for the Xuhui Campus.

Both the Xuhui and Minhang campuses provide on-campus accommodation options. Due to limited capacity, the availability of on-campus accommodation is not guaranteed. Detailed information on the on-campus accommodation is provided as follows:

  1. Minhang Campus: Building 1 and Building 2 of Nanyang Bei Yuan International Student Apartment
             
    a. Building 1 and Building 2 of Nanyang Bei Yuan (南洋北苑) is located at No. 360, Zhangjiali Road, Minhang District, Shanghai. Two types of rooms are available: a single room with an independent toilet and a single room with a shared toilet. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and basic furniture. The size of the bed is 120cm*200cm, and bedding needs to be prepared by yourself.
  1. Xuhui Campus: Tao Li Yuan and Lianxing Building
  1.  Tao Li Yuan (桃李苑) is located on the Xuhui Campus. Two types of rooms are available: single room and double room. Both types are equipped with a private bathroom, an air conditioner, free Wi-Fi, and basic furniture. The size of the bed is 100cm*200cm, and bedding needs to be prepared by yourself.

5. ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPTS

Undergraduate transcripts can be downloaded by logging into the system at log into the “交我办” or my.sjtu.edu.cn ---undergraduate---undergraduate Electronic Transcript to apply for the transcript.
  • Graduate Transcript
Graduate transcripts will be produced in batches due to the inconsistent timing of course grade releases, and electronic versions will be sent to students via email. Electronic transcripts for the Fall semester will be sent to the student's email from March to April. For the Spring semester, they will be sent from September to October.
6. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Note:For scholarship students, SJTU does not provide free dormitory, but provides accommodation subsidy (1,200 RMB/ Month for General scholars,1,500RMB/Month for Senior scholars) .
