3. Do I need to pay the application fee?

We have an admission application fee of USD130 or RMB800 which is mandatory and not refundable, but no extra fee is charged for applicants to apply for a scholarship.

All admission applicants should pay the fee before the submission of your online application. The application fee can be paid through either online payment or bank transfer.

If you have been awarded with CSC scholarship through your embassy or MOFCOM scholarship, you don’t need to pay the application fee. Under this circumstance, please inform us of your application information via email to gs.admission@sjtu.edu.cn for further instructions.

4. Can I send my application and documents by email?

No. We do not accept applications by email. Please submit your application onto our online application system Study@SJTU(http://isc.sjtu.edu.cn/EN/ )

5. Do I need to mail the hard copy documents to your office? What is the address?

No, the admission application would be processed online, and applicants DO NOT need to mail the paper application materials to our office

11. Can the language certificate be waived if I can get a certificate from my previous university certifying that my last program was conducted and completed in English?

You can apply for this year’s program so long as you can get your degree certificate before the registration time in Sept . Please upload a confirmation letter from your university verifying that you are expected to obtain the degree certificate in due time. If you cannot provide it, we are afraid you are not eligible to apply for our programs.

13. What is the “scholarship award letter”?

The scholarship award letter refers to the certificate issued by the Chinese embassy or other organizations which verifies that you have been awarded with a specific scholarship e.g. CSC scholarship through embassies/MOFCOM program.

14. What is the “remittance notice”?

The remittance notice refers to the receipt from the bank. If you have paid the application fee through bank transfer, please upload the remittance notice onto our website.

If you have paid the application fee through online payment, you don’t need to provide the remittance notice.

15. How can I pay the application fee?

You can choose online payment or bank transfer. You will see the instructions in the online application system Step 8. The application fee should be paid before the submission of online application.

1. Visa Guide for Freshmen

Welcome to study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Applicants who have been enrolled should apply for the Student Visa (X visa) before coming to China. X visa holders shall apply for a Temporary Residence Permit from the local Public Security Bureau within 30 days upon entry into China, and anyone who fails to do so shall result in illegal residence. It is recommended that students avoid early entry to save potential trouble.

If you are applying visa from outside China

Documentation required for Student Visa (X1 or X2 visa) application at Chinese embassies and consulates:

If you are applying for withdrawal (suspension)

Any students applying for withdrawal (suspension) are asked to change their Residence Permit to Stay Permit.

A. Degree Students: Withdrawal (Suspension) Application Form is available for degree students at International Students Development Center and language students at School of International Education.

B. Visit SJTU Service Center for Exit-Entry Administration to be provided with visa alteration forms with following required documentation:

a. Passport

b. One Passport Photo

c. Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Visitors (must be applied in Shanghai)

C. Visit Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau to apply for visa alteration. (Requited documentation as above)

Notice: It takes at least two week for visa alteration to become effective. Please avoid booking tickets in advance to save potential trouble.

3. Visa Guide for Dependents

The University will assist students’ dependent family members in applying for Tourist Visa (L visa for personal matters), the expiring date of which shall accord with the students’ residence permit in China. The University will not be able to assist with visa-free access. Following documentation is required for such assistance:

a. The dependent’s Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Visitors

b. Passports of both the student and his/her dependent

c. Certificate of Kinship (If issued by foreign authorities, the certificate must be verified by Chinese embassies and consulates and translation by China’s domestic translation agencies are also required when necessary)

d. One passport photo of the dependent

e. Full-fare tuition is required of the student

About Internship Remark
1. Are all enrolled international students allowed to intern?

Degree-program  students  may  apply  for  internships  if  their  study  plan includes internship requirements and has approval from their college. If there are  no  internship  requirements  in  the  study  plan,  they  are  generally  not permitted to intern. Exchange students may apply for internships if required by the exchange agreement and with approval from their college.

2. What documents are needed to apply for an internship?

International students should contact the teacherresponsible for internships at their college. Under the college's guidance, they need to provide documents such  as:  a  copy  of  their  passport  and  visa,  a  registration  form  for  temporary residence, a guidance note for internship employers (《国际学生校外实习指导意见书》)  with  the  employer's  official  stamp,  and  an  off-campus  internship certificate (《国际学生校外实习证明》).

3. What is the application process, and how long does it take?

Step 1: The student submits an application to the college, which generally takes 2-3 working days for approval.

Step 2: The student then requests the guidance note for internship employers (《国际学生校外实习指导意见书》) with the employer's official stamp, with the timeline depending on the organization.

Step 3:  The  student  submits  the  internship  documents  to  the  International Student Center for review, which generally takes 2-3 working days.Step 4: Finally, the student submits the documents to the Shanghai Exit-Entry Administration  Bureau  to  complete  the  internshipprocess,  which  generally takes 5-7 workingdays.

Note: After obtaining an internship visa, students may taketheir visa to intern at the internshiporganization. Please ensure to plan your internship schedule carefully and prepare all necessary materials in advance.

About Housing
1. What about the facilities in international student apartments?

No. 9 Apartment Building: Located in the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (800 Dongchuan Rd, Minhang District, Shanghai, close to the university hospital), it’s an international student apartment with six floors. All rooms are with double beds with independent bathrooms, air conditioners, a free campus network and essential furniture. The size of the bed is 1.0m * 2.0m.

Nanyang Beiyuan Apartment for International Students: Located two kilometers away from the No.3 North Gate of Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in No.360 ZhangJiali Rd. Building No.1 is an international student apartment with 13 floors. There’re single rooms (with a private bathroom) and AB rooms (Separated bedrooms with a shared bathroom) equipped with air conditioners, a free campus network and essential furniture. The size of the bed is 1.2 m*2.0 m. Around the apartment are the campus canteen, supermarket, café, laundry, gym, and meeting room.

Tao Li Yuan:Located in the Xuhui Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (No. 655 Fanyu Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai), it’s an international student apartment with six floors. There’re single rooms and double rooms with private bathrooms, air conditioners, free campus network, and essential furniture for each. The size of bed is 1.2 m * 2.0 m. In the entrance hall there’s a laundry.

2. Can I book a room on the other campus?

Reservations can only be made within your campus, not across campuses.

3. How can I travel between Xuhui Campus and Minhang Campus?

We provide shuttle buses between Xuhui and Minhang campuses with fixed bus stops. A one-way trip between the campuses usually takes about 40 minutes. You can also choose the subways (Line 5 and Line 15) or buses.

4. Can I change the room after booking?

Students who have successfully booked a room normally are not allowed to change the room during the booked period. If you choose a double room, please be aware of and respect the habits of your roommate.

5. Can I check in to the campus apartment ahead of time?

The earliest check-in date for the dormitory is September 13(rd), 2024, and it is mandatory for students to complete offline registration. Students who arrive before the designated check-in date or fail to complete offline registration will have to make their own accommodation arrangements. Before check-in, please ensure that you have obtained your campus card and have recharged it, as the bathing equipment requires payment with your campus card.

6. How can I get the Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Foreign Visitors?

Students living on the campus need to register and check in with your valid ID credentials at the reception.

Students living in apartments or rented houses outside the campus can refer to “3.2.1 Off-campus Accommodation Registration Form for International Students”

Students living in hotels or off campus shall register and check-in according to the rules and regulations as the hotels require.
