Macaca fascicularis and Macaca mulatta are the most commonly used non-human primates in experimental research and are widely utilized in biomedical and human evolutionary studies due to their close genetic affinity to humans (having diverged around 25 million years ago), particularly in the fields of human trait formation, disease modeling, and drug metabolism. Their reference genome has been widely applied in these studies, especially in understanding human characteristic trait formation, disease modeling, and drug metabolism. However, the existing reference genomes still contain many unknown sequences, particularly in the regions of the centromere, segmental duplications (SDs), and ribosomal DNA (rDNA), which limits the in-depth exploration of primate evolutionary mechanisms and their biomedical value.

A research team led by Professor Xiaoshi Qian from the SJTU School of Mechanical Engineering has designed and synthesized a new lead-free perovskite oxide featuring a high-polar-entropy state that exhibits a giant electrocaloric effect. Their work sheds light on the fundamental relationship between atomic-scale structure and material performance.

On April 4, 2025, a delegation Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore—led by Senior Vice President Joseph Sung—visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) to discuss institutional collaboration. SJTU Vice President Xianqun Fan, who also serves as Dean of the School of Medicine and is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, welcomed the delegation at the Xuhui Campus.

On April 6, Xin Zhao, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), met with a delegation led by Prinat Apirat, Consul General of Thailand in Shanghai, at the Student Center on SJTU’s Minhang campus. The two sides engaged in productive dialogue focused on cultural exchange and international cooperation.

From the classrooms of SJTU’s Global Competence Education to the desks of the United Nations headquarters, an increasing number of graduates are choosing international organizations as the starting point of their careers. In 2025, many SJTU students are stepping into different roles within the UN—from field missions in Africa to policy work in Europe. Some have already begun work with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), others are packing for posts in Northern Europe, while a few have even missed their own graduation ceremonies for overseas internships. Their choices reflect not only the impact of SJTU’s global competence education but also a growing commitment among young Chinese talent to contribute to global governance.

With caps in the air and dreams on the horizon, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) held its 2025   Commencement Ceremony and Degree Conferment Ceremony for its graduates at the Fok Ying Tung Sports Center on March 29. University leaders, faculty, alumni, and families gathered at the venue to celebrate the graduating Class of 2025. Over 3,400 graduates received their degrees, marking the beginning of a new chapter, carrying with them SJTU’s motto of “remembering one’s roots”.

On March 22, the “Art Meets Science” oil painting exhibition by  renowned physicist and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Professor Yixin Chen, officially opened at the Yichi Shanhai Art Museum in the Dalinghaowan area of Shanghai’s Minhang District. The exhibition is a joint effort between the Oriental Art Exchange Center of SJTU and the Yichi Shanhai Art Museum.

On March 23, 2025, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Indonesia Alumni Association held its 2025 Annual Meeting and Council Transition Conference in Jakarta. SJTU Deputy Party Secretary and Vice President of SJTU Weiwei Hu, alongside Deputy Director of the University Affairs Committee Ansheng Zhang, sent their congratulations through a letter and a video message, respectively. Representatives from the the Alumni Affairs Office, the China Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia, and over 20 alumni attendees gathered to celebrate their shared connection and discuss the future direction of the association.
