Shanghai Jiao Tong University Leaders Meet Delegation of Swedish University Presidents

On October 10, 2025, President Ding Kuiling and Vice President Liu Weidong of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) met with a delegation of university presidents from Sweden at the Minhang Campus. The delegation included Anders Söderholm, President of KTH Royal Institute of Technology; Stefan Östlund, Vice President of KTH; Erik Renström, President of Lund University; Anders Hagfeldt, President of Uppsala University; and Martin Nilsson Jacobi, President of Chalmers University of Technology.

President Ding Kuiling extended a warm welcome to the Swedish delegation. He noted that the universities of both countries have long been trusted and close partners, serving as an important bridge connecting higher education institutions in China and Sweden. President Ding introduced recent developments at SJTU and highlighted that past collaboration achievements have laid a solid foundation for a new chapter of partnership. He expressed hope that the two sides will further deepen cooperation in elite talent cultivation, international scientific research, and innovation and entrepreneurship education.

Vice President Liu Weidong presided over the symposium. During the meeting, he provided an overview of SJTU’s history, academic structure, and international cooperation initiatives.

Anders Söderholm, President of KTH Royal Institute of Technology, delivered remarks on behalf of the Swedish delegation. He stated that this visit aimed to further consolidate the strategic partnership with SJTU and expressed a strong desire to explore new areas of collaboration based on previous successful cooperation. He hoped that both sides could achieve new breakthroughs in joint degree programs and student exchanges, and proposed expanding cooperation into frontier fields of global importance such as climate change, energy technology, life sciences, artificial intelligence, and sustainable materials. Both sides agreed to continue deepening faculty and student exchanges and academic collaboration, jointly promoting their partnership to a higher level.

 

Leaders from the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering, UM-SJTU Joint Institute, School of Mechanical Engineering, and School of Biomedical Engineering participated in the discussion. They shared ongoing and planned research and educational collaborations with Swedish universities.

After the symposium, the delegation visited the Institute of Medical Robotics and Zerone Bay, gaining insight into SJTU’s innovative research and development environment.

Founded in 1827, the KTH Royal Institute of Technology is Sweden’s leading institution in engineering and technology, producing about one-third of the nation’s engineers. It ranks among the top technical universities in Northern Europe and is a member of the Nordic Five Tech (N5T) alliance. Lund University, established in 1666, is a comprehensive university with outstanding performance in engineering, natural sciences, medicine, and business, and is known for its strong interdisciplinary research.
