Project Location: Malaysia

Across the world, about 0.5% of the population is visually impaired, with over 200 million people experiencing moderate to severe vision loss. Projections suggest this number could triple by 2050. As a result, addressing visual impairment has become a pressing priority in the global health landscape.

Led by ophthalmologist Dr. Zhou Huifang, the project team traveled to Malaysia, where they engaged in rich and effective exchanges and collaborations with five local universities and medical institutions. The team shared valuable insights from China’s experience in preventing and treating complex eye diseases, while also exploring the potential for more inclusive global prevention strategies. These efforts laid a solid foundation for future cooperation with Southeast Asian nations and the ASEAN community. Additionally, the team held in-depth discussions with the United Nations University-International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH), gaining recognition and support. This further elevated global attention on vision care and introduced new momentum to the global fight against eye diseases.
