On November 12, a delegation led by Zhenbin Yang, CPC Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Committee Secretary, visited Australia and met with local alumni. The group included Houji Wang (member of the Standing Committee of the CPC SJTU Committee, Director of the United Front Work Department, and President of the SJTU Alumni Association) and representatives from the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and the SJTU Alumni Association Office.
The inaugural meeting of the new SJTU Australia Alumni Association Council was chaired by Chao Chen, a mechanical engineering graduate from the Class of 1996. The meeting featured the following:
- Houji Wang gave alumni an overview of SJTU’s history and recent accomplishments
- Haitao Yin, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, introduced new strategies and initiatives in global collaboration.
- Xiyao Gu, Director of the Alumni Association Office and Secretary-General of the SJTU Alumni Association, announced the new council appointments and extended congratulations to: Jueliang Zhang (President), Chao Chen (Executive President), Zhengguo Xu (Vice President and Head of the Melbourne Chapter), Yi Jin (Vice President and Head of the Sydney Chapter), Nianming Shu (Vice President and Head of the Medical Chapter), Ye Jin (Vice President and Secretary-General), Dong Ruan (Vice President), and Yufei Hang (Vice President), along with all council members.
In his remarks, Jueliang Zhang thanked the university for its trust in the new council and pledged to live up to its expectations. Zhang said he looked forward to working with the new team to strengthen and grow the alumni network in Australia.
Prior to the meeting, alumni and university representatives held an informal exchange, in which Zhang gave a brief overview of the association’s development and recent activities. Zhengguo Xu and Yi Jin also shared updates on alumni progress in Melbourne and Sydney, respectively. Alumni spoke about their experiences and personal growth in Australia, expressed pride in SJTU’s achievements, and offered different ideas to support the university’s future.
Zhenbin Yang warmly greeted the alumni in Australia. He shared some highlights from SJTU’s history and its impressive growth in recent years, and encouraged the alumni association to continue spreading the university’s care and community spirit. He also urged alumni to stay connected, support SJTU’s future, and keep moving forward together.
While in Melbourne, Zhenbin Yang and the delegation made a special visit to the Jueliang Zhang's home. Alumni representatives also visited Professor Xuewen Wang, a former SJTU faculty member now 93 years old.
