On April 4, 2025, a delegation Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore—led by Senior Vice President Joseph Sung—visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) to discuss institutional collaboration. SJTU Vice President Xianqun Fan, who also serves as Dean of the School of Medicine and is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, welcomed the delegation at the Xuhui Campus.
Representatives from SJTU’s International Affairs Division, the Global Institute of Future Technology (GIFT), the School of Medicine International Exchange Office, and the Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to SJTU School of Medicine were also in attendance.
During the meeting, Sung introduced NTU’s disciplinary strengths in medicine, artificial intelligence (AI), and biomedical engineering. He expressed interest in expanding collaboration with SJTU across medical education, affiliated hospitals, and research. Additionally, Sung proposed further promoting joint initiatives in home-based healthcare, smart hospitals, and collaborative clinical research with SJTU School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals. Lastly, he suggested co-establishing interdisciplinary platforms and insitutes to advance AI-driven medical solutions.
Xianqun Fan praised NTU as one of Asia’s premier research universities and emphasized the growing importance of AI in healthcares.. He noted that the two medical schools already share a solid foundation for collaboration and should further align their resources in order to accelerate progress at the intersection of AI and medicine. Furthermore, Fan outlined SJTU’s efforts in exploring smart healthcare solutions, including progress in chronic disease management, remote monitoring, and AI-assisted diagnostics. He voiced enthusiasm for stronger collaboration with NTU, particularly in building joint research platforms and cultivating talent to support the transformation of regional digital healthcare, all of which contribute to global “smart health” solutions.
The meeting was chaired by the Dean of GIFT, Jun Ni. Associate Vice President of NTU, Chunyan Miao, highlighted the university’s strengths in medical AI, while Xiuyi Fan, an Assistant Professor from the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, introduced the Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (C-AIM), which focuses on mental health, geriatric frailty, medical imaging, and cancer screening. SJTU Representatives, including Lin Xu (Director at the School of Medicine’s International Exchange Office) and Weiliang Xia (Deputy Dean of GIFT), shared updates from their respective institutions. Both sides discussed student exchange programs (undergraduate and postgraduate), talent development programs, and interdisciplinary collaboration across medicine and engineering.
