On March 23, 2025, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Indonesia Alumni Association held its 2025 Annual Meeting and Council Transition Conference in Jakarta. SJTU Deputy Party Secretary and Vice President of SJTU Weiwei Hu, alongside Deputy Director of the University Affairs Committee Ansheng Zhang, sent their congratulations through a letter and a video message, respectively. Representatives from the the Alumni Affairs Office, the China Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia, and over 20 alumni attendees gathered to celebrate their shared connection and discuss the future direction of the association.
In her letter, Hu praised the association’s eight years of dedicated work in uniting alumni, supporting international student recruitment, and fostering global collaboration. She encouraged members to uphold SJTU’s spirit of “seeking truth and being pragmatic” and “daring to be the first” as they continue to grow aside theiralma mater. Zhang expressed his hope that the association will remain a vibrant platform for alumni engagement and looked forward to welcoming alumni back to campus in the future.
Liqiang Zhang, Deputy Director of the Alumni Affairs Office, provided a university update, by highlighting SJTU’s accomplishments in education, research, talent development, faculty growth, internationalization, and alumni outreach. President of the first Council of the Indonesia Alumni Association Hongchao Shi, delivered a thorough summary of the association’s efforts in building alumni connections, facilitating exchanges between SJTU and Indonesian stakeholders, and standardizing organizational development. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to all Indonesian alumni for their support.
Deputy Director of the Liaison and Service Department of the Alumni Affairs Office Ziwen Ren, announced the new Council lineup, with Shi re-elected as President and Yongzheng Xiao appointed as Secretary-General. Liqiang Zhang presented letters of appointment to the newly elected Council members.
Shi expressed appreciation for the university’s continued support and pledged to lead the new Council in further contributing to student recruitment, international collaboration, and strengthening alumni ties, all the while empowering the Indonesian alumni community.
Liqiang Zhang, on behalf of SJTU, extended his gratitude to all the Indonesian alumni for their contributions and emphasized the importance of maintaining alumni records, building development archives, integrating quality resources, forging stronger university-alumni connections, and organizing unique activities to build a more dynamic and influential alumni network.
During their visit to Indonesia, the delegation toured XIAN SINAR MATAHARI INDONESIA, a company founded by alumnus Shi, and PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park, a subsidiary of Tsingshan Holding Group, where alumnus Vice President Changqing Ye serves as an executive. These visits offered new perspectives into alumni entrepreneurship and explored prospects for collaboration between alumni businesses and the university.
From March 24 to 25, the delegation traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where the inaugural preparatory meeting for the SJTU Malaysia Alumni Association was held. In addition to meeting with enthusiastic alumni to discuss the association’s formation, they also visited two businesses: Proton Holdings, where alumnus Huaibing Wang works, and a Belt and Road Initiative partner company, where alumnus Liyan Lu is employed, to understand their development and future plans.
On March 26, the delegation visited Bangkok, Thailand, to meet with alumni representatives and explore the possibility of forming a Thailand Alumni Association. They visited Cainiao Smart Logistics Network (Thailand), led by alumnus Ci Chen, to learn about his work and experience. Representatives from the SJTU’s Antai College of Economics and Management also participated in the discussions.
About the Indonesia Alumni Association
Established in April 2017 in Jakarta, the Indonesia Alumni Association is currently led by President Hongchao Shi and Secretary-General Yongzheng Xiao of its second Council, with over 80 registered members.
