
Lijun Deng

Introduction
Dr Lijun Deng is Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta (UAlberta) Canada. He obtained a PhD degree in 2012 from the University of California, Davis, and then joined UAlberta in 2013; previously he received a MSc and BSc in Hydraulic Engineering from Tsinghua University. At UAlberta, Dr Deng’s research interests cover earthquake engineering, sustainability, foundation engineering, soil-structure interaction, and foundations in cold regions. His research methodology has spanned laboratory-scale testing, field work, and geotechnical centrifuge modelling, and numerical methods. His publications received two Editor’s Choice awards from Canadian Geotechnical Journal. He was the recipient of UAlberta Faculty of Engineering 2024 Graduate Teaching Award. He was the Gledden Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Western Australia in 2019. He has supervised about 20 PhD and MSc students, and published 60+ journal papers. He is currently serving as an Associate Editor of Canadian Geotechnical Journal and the journal of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering. He is the Chairperson (2023 – 2024) of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division of the Canadian Geotechnical Society. He was the Chair (2020 – 2022) of the Association of Chinese Canadian Professors. As a Professional Engineer in Alberta, he actively consults in Geotechnical Engineering.
