Course Description

Course: This is a public course for all undergraduates.

Course Background: Global warming, air pollution and energy shortages are closely-related to energy supply and demand in cities. The low-carbon transformation of cities is one of the significant approaches to solve these problems. The basic unit of low-carbon cities is the low-carbon building that includes green buildings, solar buildings, prefabricated buildings and intelligent buildings. Since the carbon emissions of building sector is remarkable, the reduction of building carbon emissions is critical to achieving the global carbon neutrality.

Main Contents: Aiming at the key methods of low-carbon cities and their basic units of low-carbon buildings, the teaching content of the course mainly includes the basic theories and technologies of green buildings, solar buildings, prefabricated buildings, intelligent buildings, and low-carbon cities. These methods can effectively reduce building carbon emissions and help achieve low-carbon buildings and cities using low-carbon technology, green materials, and artificial intelligence technology.

Course Objectives: Let students know the building methods to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, master basic knowledge of building energy conservation, artificial intelligence, etc., and understand the technologies for the reduction of building carbon emission.

Academic Team

Instructor 1PI: Jianhui Hu

Jianhui Hu, Ph.D., Associate Professor (tenure-track) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is the PI for several funds from NSFC, MOST, JSPS, RS and Sino-Japanese Cooperation. He published about 100 peer-reviewed papers and got 16 National Patents. He was selected as the JSPS Fellow in 2018 and was the finalist for Shanghai Science and Technology Youth 35 Leading Program in 2021. His work was awarded the first Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award from Shanghai Government in 2020.

 Instructor 2: Jian Yang

Jian Yang, the vice Dean of NAOCE, Tenured professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Professor Yang received the funds from EPSRC, NSFC and MOST and completed a number of industry funded research projects. He is an active researcher with a great interest in sustainable materials used in structural engineering, smart construction and maintenance and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Civil Engineering. He is responsible for the teaching affairs of undergraduate students in NAOCE. His research has received more than 10 awards from the government and the associations.

Instructor 3: Dingwen Bao

2021 Research Awards Recipients - RMIT University

Dingwen Bao is an Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture & Urban Design, RMIT University. His research explores design methodologies for establishing a complementary relationship among computational design, structural engineering, behavioral algorithms, and robotic fabrication. Dingwen is an Australian Registered Architect, US Registered Architect and UK RIBA Chartered Architect with over ten years of practical experience. He received two significant first prizes in national and international competitions on structural optimization and additive manufacturing in 2019 and 2020.

What skills will students get?

1. Understand the basic theories and main methods involved in low-carbon buildings and cities, know the necessity of low-carbon transformation of the building industry.

2. Understand the main technologies of low-carbon buildings and cities, and analyze low-carbon technologies required by different building forms, and improve the comprehensive analysis ability.

3. Establish a reliable theoretical and technical framework to analyze low-carbon performance of buildings.
