Course Description

This hybrid course, designed for MBA, Master of Finance, and senior undergraduate students from SJTU and partner universities worldwide, provides a comprehensive examination of key issues facing financial intermediaries in a rapidly changing global environment marked by increasing geopolitical uncertainty. Building on foundational concepts in finance and economics, the course uses case studies to address critical topics in risk management for commercial banks and other financial institutions, with a particular focus on banking industry practices in China.

What skills will students get?

Students will gain a deep understanding of the specialness of commercial banks and the reasons why they require special regulatory attention, through cases on Fintech and Financial Regulation in China, Digital RMB, Collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and etc. Students will also learn methods and tools to measure and manage the risks faced by commercial banks and other financial institutions, through cases on credit analysis of commercial and industrial loans, Orange County and etc. Upon successful completion, students will be well-prepared to analyze and address the challenges faced by financial institutions in a rapidly changing, uncertain global landscape.

Course-specific Restrictions

Prerequisite Courses: Basic Probability and Statistics, Economics and Finance

Students are expected to have some background in basic economic theory (macroeconomics and microeconomics), algebra, differential calculus, statistics, and a disposition to keep themselves informed of current developments in the area of banking and finance.
Note: This is a course in finance, with focus on the risk management and quantitative analysis. This course is NOT suitable for students without any background in economics, statistics, analytics or linear algebra.
