On December 9, 2025, the Shanghai–Macao Economic and Cultural Development Association’s “2025 Shanghai–Macao Business, Culture, Tourism, and Sci-Tech Innovation Exchange Delegation,” led by Honorary President Ho Ian Sang, President Su Hsiang Mei, and Chairperson Fung I, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) for a dedicated research and exchange program. SJTU’s university leadership—including Liu Weidong, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President; Wang Houji, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Director of the United Front Work Department; and Yang Ming, Assistant to the President—participated in the delegation. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on strengthening university-local collaboration, promoting industry–university–research integration, and advancing the cultivation of young innovative talent.

The delegation successively visited the University History Museum, the National Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering’s Towing Tank Laboratory, and the Student Innovation Center, gaining a comprehensive understanding of SJTU’s century-long institutional development, scientific research achievements, and talent training models.

At the University History Museum, the delegation viewed a rich array of historical artifacts, photographs, and multimedia exhibits depicting SJTU’s development since its founding in 1896. As a pioneer of modern higher education in China, the university has consistently aligned its mission with national needs and has cultivated numerous distinguished figures, including Jiang Zemin, Qian Xuesen, Wu Wenjun, and Huang Xuhua. The museum’s four sections—“Historical Overview,” “SJTU Today,” “Distinguished Alumni,” and “Spirit of SJTU”—provide an integrated presentation of the university’s achievements and enduring traditions, leaving a strong impression on the visitors.

At the National Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering’s Towing Tank Laboratory, Professor Peng Tao of the School of Ocean & Civil Engineering introduced the facility’s capabilities. Equipped with a multi-unit wave-generation system capable of producing both standardized random waves and custom spectra, the laboratory supports hydrodynamic experiments for ships and offshore structures in still water and wave conditions. It also conducts propeller performance testing and research on self-propelled and controlled special vessels, contributing to fields such as renewable energy and underwater engineering. The delegation recognized the laboratory’s significant role in international academic collaboration and its contributions to China’s maritime strategy.

During their visit to the Student Innovation Center, the delegation toured an integrated innovation and entrepreneurship platform encompassing teaching, practical training, competitions, and incubation. As one of the first national-level Innovation and Entrepreneurship Colleges, the center has developed a “curriculum–competition–creation” model grounded in interdisciplinary collaboration and experiential learning. Equipped with advanced laboratories, an open Fab-Lab, and an international makerspace, the center fosters student innovation and entrepreneurial engagement. The delegation commended SJTU’s efforts in advancing new models of innovation and entrepreneurship education under the new engineering framework and strengthening the cultivation of young innovative talent.

Nearly 40 representatives from Macao’s government, business, and community sectors participated in the visit. The program deepened the association’s understanding of SJTU’s educational philosophy and research strengths and laid a solid foundation for future cooperation in education, science and technology, and culture. Both sides expressed their commitment to working together to promote innovation-driven development and expand practical collaboration, jointly opening a new chapter in Shanghai–Macao exchange and cooperation.
