SJTU Alumnus Guoping Feng Elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences

On April 30, 2024, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced the election of 120 new members and 24 international members in recognition of their continued and outstanding contributions to their fields of research. Among the newly elected international members is Professor Guoping Feng, a 1985 master’s graduate in pharmacology from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) School of Medicine.

Professor Feng was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019 and to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine in 2023. His latest election to the National Academy of Sciences marks his third major academy honor in the United States.

A globally renowned expert in neuroscience, Professor Feng focuses on the mechanisms that regulate synapse development and function in the brain, as well as how synaptic dysfunction contributes to psychiatric disorders. His research advances the understanding of the neurobiological basis behind brain development and mental illnesses by integrating genetically engineered animal models with state-of-the-art technologies and interdisciplinary approaches. His work has brought new scientific insight into the origins of psychiatric disorders, providing an improved theoretical foundation the treatment of conditions such as autism and ADHD.
