Overview of the School of Oceanography, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
The School of Oceanography traces its roots to 2013, when the Institute of Oceanography was first established at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). In 2018, guided by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Natural Resources, SJTU partnered with the Second Institute of Oceanography to launch a new model of integrated education and research, leading to the formal establishment of the School of Oceanography. In 2021, the university signed a co-establishment agreement with the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration. That same year, the School was officially recognized as one of China’s first integrated education-research platforms—and remains the only one based at a university.
About the Faculty
The School follows a faculty-first strategy and actively recruits talent from around the world to support its academic development. It has assembled a team of approximately 120 faculty and staff, including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 2 members of the US National Academy of Sciences. Over 95% of faculty have overseas study or work experience, and all faculty hold doctorates. Faculty under the age of 45 make up 75% of the team. The School has created a vibrant, high-level academic community with strong international credentials and a culture of innovation.
Research Infrastructure
In recent years, the School has been approved to establish several national and provincial research platforms, including:
- Postdoctoral Research Station in Marine Science
- Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Polar Ecology and Climate Change
- National Field Research Station for Marine Risk and Disaster in Daya Bay (Ministry of Natural Resources)
- Shanghai Key Laboratory for Polar Life and Environmental Processes
- Shanghai Frontier Science Research Base for Polar Studies
- SJTU Marine Carbon Flux Research Center
Furthermore, the School jointly operates the Ministry of Natural Resources Polar Engineering Technology Innovation Center with the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration and participates in building the National Key Laboratory for Submarine Science and Maritime Boundary Delimitation.
The School hosts a wide range of specialized labs, such as:
- Physical Oceanography Lab
- Polar and Climate Change Lab
- Mobile Observation Systems Lab
- Clean Lab
- Biological Oceanography Lab
- Marine Microbiology Lab
- Deep-Sea Technology Lab
- Organic Geochemistry Lab
- Inorganic and Trace Metals Lab
- Biogeochemistry Lab
These labs are supported by skilled technical staff and benefit from shared access to state-of-the-art facilities at the Second Institute of Oceanography and the Polar Research Center.
About our Research
The School primarily conducts high-quality research focused on China’s coastal waters, mid to high-latitude oceans, deep-sea life processes, environmental simulations, paleoclimate, deep-sea vehicles, and unmanned ocean observation technologies. The School has led major national projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology (such as the 973 and 863 programs), key projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and others. Faculty have published research in top journals including Nature, Science, and PNAS.
Talent Development
The School offers a top-tier undergraduate program in marine science and holds master’s and doctoral degree-granting status in the same discipline. In 2024, the marine science discipline at SJTU received an A+ rating in the Times Higher Education China Subject Ratings (Natural Sciences). Undergraduate enrollment began in 2019, and the School now has more than 400 full-time students. In 2022, its marine science major was selected as a national-level “First-Class Undergraduate Program.”
The School is committed to nurturing global future leaders. It promotes a training model that emphasizes strong foundations, interdisciplinary thinking, and hands-on experience, offering an integrated undergraduate-to-doctoral curriculum. The program combines interdisciplinary coursework with a full-cycle practical training platform, aiming to prepare students to explore the ocean, engage with the world, and take on leadership roles in comprehensive marine research.
