On the afternoon of May 14, the 2025 Spring "Study Abroad Safely" Pre-Departure Training Session was successfully held in Room 1-106 of the East China Courtyard. The event was hosted by the "Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China", organized by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, and co-organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Over 200 faculty and students preparing for their overseas visits attended the session, gaining valuable knowledge and guidance to help ensure a smooth, well-prepared, and safe journey abroad.

Safe Study Abroad and Consular Protection

At the start of the event, Ms. Ji Mei from the "Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China" delivered a special talk titled "Safe Study Abroad and Consular Protection." Drawing from real-life cases, she provided a detailed overview of the types of risks students may encounter overseas and introduced the concept of consular protection. She emphasized the importance of enhancing safety awareness and strengthening self-protection skills to help faculty and students navigate complex and unfamiliar environments abroad—always putting safety first.

Analysis of Common Scams Targeting International Students and How to Respond

Next, Mr. Chen Entao from the Campus Security Office delivered an in-depth analysis of common scams targeting international students and presented practical response strategies. Through vivid real-life examples, he helped faculty and students gain a clear understanding of the importance of fraud prevention and equipped them with effective measures to protect themselves.

Officer Yang Chen from the University Division of the Shanghai Police Station handed out anti-fraud tip sheets and reminded attendees to stay vigilant while abroad. He warned against falling victim to scams such as currency exchange fraud, third-party payment and purchasing schemes, and virtual kidnapping.

Starting with the Mental

Ms. Zhu Tingfei from the Psychological Counseling Center gave a thoughtful talk on the mental and emotional changes that teachers and students may face while studying abroad. She led the audience in exploring common mental challenges during overseas experiences, explained how to understand and support these issues from a psychological perspective, and offered practical strategies for mental adjustment. Ms. Zhu emphasized that when facing mental stress or difficulties abroad, one should not hesitate to seek help—but instead take the initiative to reach out for support.

Procedures for Official Overseas Travel (Including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan)

In the end, Ms. Ge Yiwei from the "Service Center for Exit-Entry Administration" provided an overview of the procedures for official overseas travel. She gave a detailed explanation of the application process and related exit-entry formalities, offering practical guidance and advice to faculty and students preparing for their upcoming international trips.

The "Study Abroad Safely" Pre-Departure Training Session offered rich and practical content, receiving enthusiastic feedback and high praise from both faculty and students. Through this training, participants not only gained essential knowledge about safety abroad, but also learned about important procedures and key considerations for studying overseas.
