On the morning of October 19th, the "2024 FourC Challenge 24-Hour Charrette Contest" hosted by the School of Design of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) kicked off online. The competition attracted more than 200 students and experts from architecture, design, landscape architecture and interdisciplinary backgrounds from nearly 50 top universities and institutions worldwide.

The FourC Challenge aims to bring together young people from around the globe to collaborate and promote a more sustainable world through the power of design, in response to existing social issues across national boundaries, professions and academic institutions, and to build a more sustainable and inclusive living environment.

Professionals Gather to Talk about Perception Design
Anijo Mattew
Prof. Anijo Mathew, Dean of the School of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology, gave a keynote speech on “FUTURE (IM)PERFECT: Re-imagining a post-design thinking world for designers”. He said that design is a comprehensive system. Nowadays, design is not only about designing things, but also about redesigning systems and organizational structures. Design should be more proactively outspoken, and through instructive means engage in the creation of business models. Utilizing the design approach of rough early-staging and rapid prototyping to quickly establish iterative patterns, design is understood not only as design thought, but moreover as an important part of future leadership.

The contest follows a Make-a-thon format. After 24 hours of creation, all participating teams successfully completed their work. After two rounds of comprehensive review, 12 works stood out from a total of 34.

Awards
Ceremony
Students from different regions from around the world discussed the inclusiveness and sustainability of the future human habitat and produced meaningful works. The final list of winners will be announced and awarded on November 16, 2024 at the closing ceremony and at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Innovation and Design Forum. This year's contest has also been supported by Heatherwick Studio, and a special award has been set up to encourage human-centered design thinking among young designers.
