Research on water pollution in valleys and regions of Chao Phraya River and Mekong River and on local environmental protection policies

Background and Purposes

As the main rivers in Thailand, the Chao Phraya River and the Mekong River are indispensable for agricultural, transport, and living in the central plains of the country. With rapid urban development in recent years, the rivers have been polluted by domestic and plant sewage, even more so at estuaries. Meanwhile, giving way to highway traffic networks, many canals in Bangkok and other places that were used for water transportation has been filled and leveled, resulting in weak drainage and thus recurrent mansoon floods.

This project, made possible through cooperation between SJTU and Mahidol University in Thailand, is designed to provide justifiable and feasible guidance for local river pollution control based on investigation results from the joint survey, testing, and evaluation of the water of local rivers. In addition, working with the local government, through the project we will closely analyze local environmental protection policiesand accordingly present theoretical rationales for local environmental protection endeavors

General Outline

A set of scientific methods, such as surveys, field visits, site selection for sampling, sampling, and water quality monitoring, will be applied to evaluate local environmental protection policies as well as the pollution of the Chao Phraya River and the Mekong River, coupled with a comprehensive study on the impact of nearby production and social activities on the water quality, in a bid to put forward an analysis report and a proposal for improvement.

Management Guidelines

1. The project leader supervises the project, including charting progress, managing budget, deploying personnel , replenshing supplies, and assigning tasks to proper members based on progress, and reviews their completion.

2. All the materials produced throughout the research shall not be omitted or kept to oneself by anyone. Any content therein shall not be copied or published without permission.

3. Experiments shall be documented  accurately and completely in a timely manner. Academic research records shall include experiment name, plans, experimenters, time, tools and materials, conditions, methods, procedures, process, results, as well as data of the indicators. Data processing and analysis are expected after each experiment, based on which to produce a written summary.

4. Any notebooks where are recorded the experimental design, operational process, research content, and data, and other documents or materials shall belong to the project team.

5. After the research concludes, the project leader is supposed produce a final report and academic papers and submit the conclusive report to Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
