Course Description

Shanghai, one of the world's smartest cities, is strategically focused on becoming a global digital hub by 2035, with the metaverse being a key area of growth. In recognition of the importance of virtual technology, digital media, and creative practice in shaping the metaverse, this course offers an immersive learning experience for university students worldwide.

The course will provide a comprehensive curriculum that includes lectures, company visits, and hands-on creative practices in the metaverse. Participants will gain a holistic understanding of metaverse creative practice, culminating in a creative group project. The course will explore Shanghai's pioneering efforts to establish itself as an international digital metropolis, offering valuable insights into its cutting-edge advancements.

Beyond academic learning, the program will encourage cultural exchange and intellectual stimulation among students from diverse backgrounds. Through collaborative work in small groups, students will utilize metaverse-related technologies to develop innovative and captivating projects, showcasing their expertise in the field.

Instructors

Associate Professor Ruiqing (Alex) MA

Ruiqing (Alex) MA is an Associate Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a Visiting Scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and a cross-media creative producer with over a decade of experience in film and media. His cinematic works have been screened at prestigious international film festivals, including Shanghai, Tokyo, and Busan. As a scholar-practitioner, MA has led various ministry-level research projects and published in leading academic journals. He is a member of the China Film Association and the China Television Artists Association, and serves as the International Collaboration Committee Secretary General at the China Cinema Editors Association.

 

Mr. Jiaxin (Gavin) YE

Mr. Jiaxin (Gavin) YE is the director of the USC-SJTU Institute of Creative and Culture Industry Education Technology Center and Laboratory Management Office, as well as an engineer at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is also a member of the Expert Committee of the China Communications Industry Association, specializing in virtual production technology, integrated media technology, and other areas of expertise.

 

Professor Pan HUI

Professor Pan Hui is a Chair Professor of Computational Media and Arts and the Director of the Center for Metaverse and Computational Creativity at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), and a Chair Professor of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas and the Director of the HKUST-DT Systems and Media Laboratory at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His contributions to academia have earned him several prestigious titles. He is an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Member of the Academia Europaea, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a Distinguished Scientist of the Association for Computing Machinery.

 

Dr. Rong ZHANG

Dr. Rong ZHANG is a Lecture I at the Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is responsible for the development and teaching of core courses at the university and school levels as well as specialized courses such as "Metaverse Cross-disciplinary Design Thinking”. He has extensive experience in guiding and cultivating interdisciplinary talents and has been involved in the formulation and implementation of the new engineering and entrepreneurship programs at the HKUST and the HKUST(GZ).
