As China re-opened her arms to embrace the world in 1979, the robotics institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was established in the same year to conduct fundamental and applied robotics research, as well as boost academic and technology exchanges with the rest of world. Now the SJTU robotics institute is among the top three institutions for robotics research in China, with numerous world-class lab equipment and facilities occupying 3,000 square meters on SJTU campus, 5,000 square meters in the Lingang Institute of Intelligent Manufacturing, and 3,500 square meters in the Hai’an Institute of Robotics Research.
There are currently 30 faculty members at the SJTU robotics institute, including an academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and three Changjiang Chair Professors. Their diversified expertise have converged robotics researches on fundamentals such as kinematics, dynamics and control, bio-mechatronics, signal processing, sensors and actuators, as well as applications such as biomedical robots, intelligent prostheses, industrial robotic systems, special robots, intelligent service robots, ubiquitous robotic presence, surgical robots, rehabilitation robots, assistive robots, soft robots. The cutting-edge researches are supported by a number of national and international funding agencies such as National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology, European Commission Framework Programme.
