The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) was cofounded by two top universities in the U.S. and China, the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2006. Ever since its inception, it has taken student-centered approaches to building a world-class research institute and nurturing future innovative leaders. It aims to blaze new trails in the reform of China’s higher eduction sector in terms of educational vision, management system, talent training, faculty buildingand cooperation in academic research.
It aspires to be acknowledged nationally and internationally as a leading engineering institute and to foster interdisciplinary, innovative talents who are continuously challenged at the forefront of the times in response to tomorrow’s major national strategic needs. Significant breakthroughs have been made in frontier topics and interdisciplinary research through international cooperation. All these efforts are underpinned by the highly international and intelligent IT-based management system. Each year will see 300 students spread across its three undergraduate majors: Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).
The UM-SJTU Joint Institute has been highly recognized both in China and beyond since its establishment and earned multiple prestigious awards, including the “National Model of Higher Education Reform” by China’s National Leading Group on Educational Reform, and the most well-regarded “IIE Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education”.In 2016, two high-performing undergraduate programs-Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering-were accredited by the international authoritative accreditation institution Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), which speaks volumes about the quality of its programe offerings and talent training, and also marks a milestone in its commitments to expanding international cooperation for competitive edges at home and abroad.
