On February 19, 2025, Ding Kuiling, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with H.E. Mr. Farhod Arziev, Ambassador of Uzbekistan to China, and his delegation at the Minhang Campus. Vice President Liu Weidong accompanied the meeting.
Ding Kuiling welcomed Ambassador Arziev and introduced the history and development of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which was "born for strength, prospered through reform, and flourished due to talent." He also highlighted the university's recent educational cooperation with Central Asian countries. He emphasized that China and Uzbekistan are good neighbors, good friends, and good partners, and that the Silk Road has always been a path of friendship between the two countries. The year 2024 marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of friendly relations between Shanghai and Tashkent, with both sides signing a new round of cooperation memorandums. Cooperation in higher education between the two countries is of great significance for improving educational standards, nurturing talented individuals, and promoting economic and social development. He expressed that the two sides could cooperate in fundamental research, talent development, and the transformation of research outcomes in the field of higher education, and welcomed more outstanding Uzbek young scholars to visit and study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Ambassador Arziev expressed his great honor in visiting Shanghai Jiao Tong University and highly praised the university’s achievements in student training and scientific research. Historically, Uzbekistan was the political and economic center of Central Asia and also the cradle of science and art. The Latin term for "algorithm," a core concept in modern computer science, is derived from the name of "the father of algebra," Al-Khwarizmi. Currently, about 60% of Uzbekistan's population is under the age of 30, bringing unprecedented opportunities for economic development and social progress, while also raising higher demands for the quality of education, employment, and services. Uzbekistan will further promote practical cooperation in higher education between the two countries and deepen strategic cooperation between universities. He hopes to further strengthen exchanges between faculty and students in fields such as engineering, agriculture, and renewable energy, and actively promote joint research projects, dual degree programs, and other initiatives with Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The relevant officials from the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, the Graduate School, the School of Agriculture and Biology, and the School of Smart Energy Innovation attended the meeting.
