Besides the SJTU athletes at the Tokyo Olympics who strived to win golds for our country,
There are many other excellent SJTU players.
Being nicknamed as “Shanghai Jiao Tong Sports University”, SJTU has been actively fostering education through sports.
We play hard and return with honor and progress.
Today, let’s look at more examples that manifest the philosophy “Loving SJTU, Loving Sports”.
SJTU Basketball Teams
In May, 2021, under the guidance of coaches Xu Yang, Cong Xuedi, Zhangxu and Song Shun, both SJTU men’s and women’s basketball teams made into the national competition of the 23rd CUBA League Division I. In the end, the women’s basketball team ranked top 12 in China, and the men’s basketball team top 8 in China, which is the best result for the men’s team in CUBA.
On the evening of June 16, 2021, the Group A women’s final of Shanghai University Basketball Cup (the former UEFA Cup) was held at Songjiang Campus of Shanghai University of Engineering Science. SJTU Sunshine Women’s Basketball Team championed the game and defended its title.
In the 23rd National College Basketball League Division II League that concluded on July 29, 2021, in Tai’an, Shandong Province, SJTU Sunshine Women’s Basketball Team attained the seventh place. This is the first time that the team has entered top 8 in the game, the highest ranking since the establishment of the team.
On the evening of December 23rd, in the women’s Group A final of Shanghai University Basketball League (SUBA), SJTU Sunshine Women’s Basketball Team defeated Shanghai University of Finance Women’s Basketball Team with a score of 57 : 40, defending the SUBA championship and entering the CUBA national finals next year.
SJTU Football Teams
In the 2021 Shanghai University Football League Cup held in May, led by team leaders Tang Wenyong, Chen Gang, coaches Chen Lei and Lu Lijuan, the SJTU Women’s Football Team stood out among the 16 participating teams, ranked first in the group competition and finally won the third place in the campus division. This is the fourth time that SJTU Women’s Football Team has step onto the medals podium since the team was founded in 2018.
On December 31, in the men’s final of Campus Division of the 2021 Shanghai University Football League, SJTU Men’s Football Team beat Donghua University Men’s Football Team with the score of 2-0 and harvested the championship. This is an extraordinary gift for the 120th anniversary of the establishment of SJTU Football Team!
SJTU Volleyball Teams
In the final of Shanghai University Volleyball Cup held on May 29, 2021, SJTU Sunshine Women’s Volleyball Team defeated its counterparts from Fudan University, Tongji University and East China University of Political Science and Law in the knockout stage, and won the championship of Women’s Group A with three wins!
In the final of 2021 Shanghai University Volleyball League on December 12, 2021, under the guidance of team leader Chen Xianfeng, chief coach Liu Chang and coach Cai Min, the SJTU Women’s Volleyball Team defeated the teams from Fudan University and Tongji University, winning the championship of Women’s Group A.
On the same day, and also led by the team leader Chen Xianfeng and the coach Cai Min and Liu Chang, the SJTU Sunshine Men’s Volleyball Team coasted through the regular season after two weeks of competition and entered the final, where SJTU Men’s Volleyball Team was unfortunately defeated by Shanghai University of Sport with 2 points behind, winning the silver medal of the 2021 Shanghai University Volleyball League.
SJTU Table Tennis Teams
SJTU Sunshine Table Tennis Team sealed the silver medal in the 2nd C9 Leage Invitational Table Tennis Tournament that concluded on July 11, 2021 at Harbin Institute of Technology. the team was coached by Associate Professor Dong Yang of the Department of Physical Education and composed of three SJTU students, namely Dai Yang (postgraduate of School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology), Qian Kun (senior student of School of Mechanical Engineering) and Gao Yijia (sophomore of UM-SJTU Joint Institute).
SJTU High-level Table Tennis Team collected 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal in the 25th China University Table Tennis Championships (Independent enrollment Group) held in Mianyang, Sichuan Province from July 25 to 30, 2021. The team was led by Liu Donghua and coaches Ding Song and Kong Lingxuan, and composed of Li Wentian and another three players.
SJTU Badminton Teams
In the 2021 Shanghai University Badminton Championships held at the Huatihui - Zhangjiang Center on November 6 and 7, 2021, the SJTU Sunshine Badminton Team led by Li Wei and coach Ye Hanzhong championed the women’s team event for the first time, marking a historical breakthrough. At the same time, the Team also achieved excellent results in the single events, winning the third place in men’s doubles and mixed doubles, and the fifth place in women’s doubles.
On November 8, under the guidance of Gu Jianping and Li Wei as well as coach Lu Lan, 15 athletes including Cui Haoran and Gao Jiankuan from the SJTU High-level Badminton Team participated in the 2021 Shanghai University Badminton Championships, and secured 1 gold and 4 silver medals with extraordinary performance.
SJTU Tennis Teams
The 25th China University Tennis Championships (East China Region) was held in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province from June 4 to 6, 2021. Shanghai Jiao Tong University High-Level Tennis Team led by coach Zheng Minghong participated in the game with eight players including Sun Liwen, Wang He Yue, etc. The Team won the women’s team championship and the men’s team runner-up of the regional competition, both entering the national finals. In the finals held in Yibin, Sichuan Province, the Team made an outstanding performance, winning one gold, two silver and one bronze medals
From June 4 to 6, under the guidance of coach Wang Yazhuo, eight members of SJTU Sunshine Tennis Team participated in the group matches of the 25th China University Tennis Championships (East China Region), including the men’s/women’s group A and the men’s championship finals. The team finally won the runner-up in the men’s group A and entered the national finals. In the finals on July 26, led by the team leader Hua Jun and coach Zheng Minghong, four members namely Feng Yulei, Wang Deng, Zhu Wen and Ding Lingyun participated in the men’s Group A competition, singles and doubles. The players who participated in the finals for the first time accumulated valuable experience in the tournament.
SJTU Track and Field Teams
From June 5 to 6, the 2021 Shanghai University Athletics League Cup was held at Xinzhuang Sports School. Two members of SJTU High-Level Track and Field Team participated in the competition. Sun Jiajie won the gold medal of men’s 5000m; Lin Peiqin won the silver medal of women’s 3000m. SJTU Sunshine Track and Field Team won four gold, three silver and two bronze medals, and attained the first place in Group A women’s team and the fifth place in Group A men’s team.
From July 31 to August 5, the 20th China University Athletics Championships were held in Zhejiang University. Led by Cai Min and coach He Zhihao, three members namely Lin Peiqin, Sun Jiajie and Hu Xianda from SJTU High-Level Track and Field Team competed in five events of Group C competitions. The team finally won one silver medal and an eighth place.
On October 23, in the regional finals of the 2021 University 100-mile Relay (Shanghai Station), Team SJTU that were composed of SJTU Sunshine Track and Field team and SJTU alumni won the championship with a sliding advantage and entered the national finals.
SJTU Swimming Teams
From May 30 to June 5, the 20th China University Swimming Championships and the 31st World University Summer Games Swimming Trials were held in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. Under the guidance of leader Liu Donghua and coaches Zhu Yingwen and Gao Yun, twelve members from SJTU High-Level Swimming Team including Zhou Binbin and Qiao Wenjie participated in Group C competition of the Championships, winning eight gold, ten silver and four bronze medals. They took the first place of Group C women’s events, the third place of Group C men’s events and the second place of Group C team events.
On June 17, the 3rd China University Sunshine Swimming Competition was held in the diving hall of Donganhu Sports Park in Chengdu. Led by Ding Lingdi and Wang Minghong, three students from SJTU Sunshine Swimming Team went for the game and won one gold in men’s 100m freestyle, one bronze medal in men’s 50m butterfly, and ranked the 7th in men's 50m butterfly.
SJTU Boat-Rowing Teams
From June 5 to 6, SJTU Sunshine Dragon Boat Team was invited to participate in the 2021 China Famous University Water Sports Open Competition and the 3rd “Ripples above the River” Carnival in Wuxing. Together with teams from 12 universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and Zhejiang University, to compete for championship of Group A. Guided by coach Gu Genxing, the SJTU Dragon Boat team worked hard with a strong cooperation spirit and won the fifth place in the 200m race and the third place in the team challenge of the Long March Road.
On October 24, the two-day 2021 Head of Shanghai River Regatta came to an end on Suzhou River, the mother river of Shanghai. Guided by leader Liu Qingguang and coach Yang Yiming, SJTU High-Level Rowing Team sent nine members to the competition, including Zhao Zuhang and Yin Yongyuan, and collected two gold medals. The 2021 Head of Shanghai River Regatta marks that the competition finally returns onto Suzhou River in nearly 20 years, and it is also the second time that SJTU has won the championship on Suzhou River after 20 years.
On October 31, the 6th China University Rowing Championships and the 31st FISU World University Games Selection Regatta were held in Fenghua, Zhejiang Province. SJTU High-Level Rowing Team led by Liu Qingguang and coach Yang Yiming sent four members including Han Wei to participate in the competition, winning one gold and one bronze.
The recently founded SJTU Sunshine Rowing Team also sent four new members to compete in this event. Under the guidance of Yang Yiming and Zhao Zuhang, the four students, namely Gu Nan, Song Ruifeng, Yang Zhikai and Wang Zhenpeng, gave all out in the play and won the fifth place of coxless fours, marking a historic beginning for SJTU Sunshine Rowing Team.
SJTU Fitness and Bodybuilding Association
On June 4 and 5, the 2nd Shanghai Student Fitness and Bodybuilding Championship was held in Shanghai Wisdom Bay. Seven students from SJTU Bodybuilding and Shaping Association joined the event, with Yu Hongyan, Associate Professor of SJTU Department of Physical Education, as the team leader and Chen Dou, an SJTU alumnus and an international bodybuilding professional, as the coach. After rounds of fierce competition, Zhang Jiaxin won the third place in group B of women’s bikini fitness; Liu Shilei won the third place in Group 70kg of men’s bodybuilding; in the men’s bodybuilding events, Li Gaoxu won the third place in group B, Fang Xiaoyong and Chen Ao won the second and third place in group D respectively.
SJTU Triathlon Association
On April 24, the 5th stop of the 3rd UniTri Shanghai Student Campus Triathlon was held at Baoshan campus of Shanghai University. Seventeen students from SJTU Triathlon Association, consisting of eleven male and six female students, participated in the race. The competition witnessed the debut of some new faces who persisted through the challenge and shared the honor of team championship with the backbone members’ excellent performance. This is the third time for SJTU Triathlon Association to participate in this event, the third time to crown the cup, and the second time to seal team first prize.
SJTU Martial Arts Team
On the morning of May 29th, the 2021 Shanghai Sunshine Sports League Wushu Boxing Competition was held in the form of online live broadcast. It requires participants to upload pre-recorded videos which are later summitted to real-time scoring by judges. Under the guidance of the leader Wang Haowei and the coaches Zhang Qianqian, Huang Yingjie and Gu Jianping, the Sunshine Wushu Team participated in the competition. In the recorded video, the students of SJTU demonstrated upbeat attitude and powerful movements, showing the youth and vigour of contemporary college students, and they finally won the first prize of the Kung Fu Fan Competition and the third prize of Men's Kung Fu Boxing.
SJTU Chess Team
On November 6th and 7th, Shanghai Sunshine Sports League Chess and Card Online Competition (For College Students) was held as planned. The International Chess Association team of Shanghai Jiao Tong University played well and achieved excellent results, including the first, second, fourth position in Men’s Individual Competition, the first in Men's Team Competition, the third and fourth place of Women's Individual Competition and the second place of Women's Team Competition. The Chinese Chess Association team won the first place in Men's and Women's Team Competition, the 5th place in Men's Individual Competition, and the 3rd and 6th place in Women's Individual Competition.
SJTU Cycling team
In April, under the guidance of team leader Wang Kun and coach Chen Gang, team members including Tian Kun, Liang Zhenkun, Deng Yanqing, Li Boyuan, Ding Yuechen, Ding Yihui and Wang Jinzhi took part in the First Online Indoor Bicycle Competition of Chinese College Students, and ultimately they won the fourth place of Men's 3km Roller Riding Competition and the eighth place of Men's 5km Roller Riding Competition.
SJTU Association of Archery
April. 10 students from the Association of Archery participated in the competition, including 7 in the traditional bows’ competition and 3 in competitive recurve bows’ competition. The first online competition is a major challenge for students, denoting SJTU is about to enter a new journey in its archery development. We believe that SJTU students will show their excellent abilities and unique styles in future competitions.
Winning the "President's Cup" for the eighth consecutive time in the National Student Games
On 17th July, the curtain descended on the 14th National Student Sports Games in Qingdao, Shandong Province. As the organizer of swimming, women's basketball and sailing events, SJTU also selected outstanding athletes in badminton and track-and-field events. A total of 50 student athletes from SJTU participated in the Games on behalf of Shanghai. After fierce competition, they won 35 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 8 bronze medals for the Shanghai delegation team, ranking far ahead among all the universities in China in terms of the number of gold Medals, the number of Medals and the total score, and winning the "President's Cup" for the eighth consecutive time in the National Student Games.
