The 5th Anniversary of the SJTU China-UK Low Carbon College and the 15th Pujiang Innovation Forum - Low-Carbon Future S&T Sub-forum of 2022 Held

On the morning of September 18, the China-UK Low Carbon College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) celebrated its 5th anniversary in the conference hall on the fifth floor of the college. The event was attended both in person and virtually by SJTU President and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Lin Zhongqin, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change of China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment Li Gao, member of the CPC Lingang Special Area Working Committee and Full-time Deputy Director of its management committee Miao Ting, member of the Standing Committee of the SJTU Party Committee and Vice President of SJTU Zhu Xinyuan, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Shenneng Group Huang Dinan, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of SRIBS Wang Jijie and its President Zhu Lei, Vice President of Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. Yang Hong, Deputy General Manager of East China Construction Group Co., Ltd. Zhou Jingyu, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of East China Electric Power Design Institute of China Power Engineering Consulting Group Gu Jin, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute (Group) Co., Ltd. Zhang Liang, President of Baowu Clean Energy Co., Ltd. Wei Wei, as well as leaders of various departments and schools of SJTU, heads of over 30 companies and public institutions, and alumni, teachers and students of some schools of SJTU. The event was facilitated by the President of the SJTU China-UK Low Carbon College Zhao Changying.

The event kicked off with the solemn national anthem. Lin Zhongqin first extended his congratulations via a video link, where he said that the college has made remarkable achievements in a number of areas in the past five years, including talent training, scientific research, and high-end training, and recognized the significant contributions that the college had made to the development of low carbon science and technology for the past five years.

Miao Ting said in his speech that the college is an integral part of the “5+2” university resources allocation in the Lingang Special Area and has played an important role in promoting the integrated development of industry and education, improving the educational system, and gathering excellent talents.

Li Gao delivered his speech via video, in which he stated that climate change is a major global challenge concerning the future of humanity and the development of all countries. He further emphasized that the achievements that the college had made in talent development, high-end training, and scientific research since its establishment are essential in helping China tackle climate change challenges.

In his video message, Peter Mathieson, the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, recognized the achievements that the college had made in international scientific research cooperation and talent training, and expressed his expectations that the two universities to further enhance cooperation in international education, complement each other's advantages, seek common development, and pool wisdom, cultivate talents and make contributions for the national and global low carbon endeavors.

SJTU and the University of Edinburgh unveiled the joint low-carbon seed fund. Zhu Xinyuan introduced the specifics of the seed fund and released the project plan for the second round of the seed fund project plan to fund the latest research in carbon neutrality and enhance scientific research cooperation between the two universities in the area of low carbon. James Smith, Vice Principal of the University of Edinburgh, also delivered a speech for the signing ceremony of the seed fund via video.

After that, Miao Ting and Zhu Xinyuan came onstage to press the button to officially unveil the joint low-carbon seed fund together!

In addition, to further deepen the close cooperation with seven major partners, the college signed strategic cooperation agreements with SRIBS, East China Construction Group Co., Ltd., Shanghai Shenneng New Energy Investment Co., Ltd., Shanghai Electric Central Research Institute, Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute (Group) Co., Ltd., East China Electric Power Design Institute of China Power Engineering Consulting Group, and Zhongdian Huachuang Electric Power Technology Research Co., Ltd.

On the afternoon of September 18th, as part of the activities for the 5th anniversary of the college, the Low-Carbon Future S&T Sub-forum of the 15th Pujiang Innovation Forum of 2022 and the 4th Carbon Neutrality Forum were held in the conference hall on the fifth floor of the main building of the college. The forum was jointly organized by SJTU and the University of Edinburgh and hosted by the college, under the joint guidance of China's Ministry of Science and Technology and the Shanghai Municipal Government.

Professors and experts from SJTU, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Southern University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, Tsinghua University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and the University of Edinburgh delivered their reports at the forum, which was also live-streamed, attracting over 5,000 viewers.
