SJTU student Dong Shuqin awarded IEEE MTT-S Graduate Fellowship for Medical Applications

Recently, Dong Shuqin, a doctoral student from the Institute of Artificial Intelligence, School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has been awarded the MTT-S Graduate Fellowship for Medical Applications for 2023 by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S). This prestigious fellowship recognizes her research in microwave technology for biomedical signal detection. Dong Shuqin is the first student from Shanghai Jiao Tong University to receive the IEEE MTT-S Graduate Fellowship and the first doctoral student in China to receive the MTT-S fellowship in the field of medical applications. The award ceremony will take place in June 2023 at the IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS), a leading international conference in the field of microwave technology.

Dong Shuqin's application for the scholarship focused on the use of Doppler cardiography for cardiac anomaly detection. She introduced the concept of "Doppler Cardiography (DCG)" to describe the mechanical activity of the heart captured by a bio-radar remote sensing system. Through clinical trials, she validated the coupling relationship between Doppler Cardiography (DCG) and the commonly used electrocardiogram (ECG) in the medical field. The non-contact detection of DCG allows for the acquisition of temporal information related to various waveform occurrences in a conventional electrocardiogram, such as RR intervals and QRS waveforms. Additionally, using deep learning models trained on cardiac motion data, it becomes possible to assess and screen for cardiac abnormalities such as premature beats and atrial fibrillation.

Currently, Dong Shuqin's research also involves the evaluation of cardiorespiratory function based on intelligent multimodal information. The findings from this research will be utilized to assist in short-term prognosis assessment and improve compliance among heart failure patients.

Student Profile

Dong Shuqin is a second-year doctoral student, supervised by Associate Professor Gu Changzhan at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Her research focuses on the application of millimeter-wave technology in the field of biomedicine. She has published two top-tier journal papers (SCI Q1) and one SCI Q2 journal article as the first author, along with one related PCT patent and seven conference papers. She has received the National Scholarship twice. Her published papers have received multiple awards, including the IEEE MTT-S IWS 2022 FLASH Competition Best Paper Award and the CICAI 2022 Best Demo Runner-up Award. Additionally, she has been selected as a finalist in three IEEE international conference student paper competitions. As a member of a research team, she won the first prize in the "2022 Digital Medical Technology and Application Innovation Competition" initiated by the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the affiliated Ruijin Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She also serves as a reviewer for IEEE TMTT and IEEE JERM journals.

About the IEEE MTT-S Graduate Fellowship for Medical Applications

IEEE MTT-S (Microwave Theory and Techniques Society) is the most authoritative organization in the field of radio frequency, microwave, and millimeter-wave theory and applications. Its publication, "IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques," is a top-tier journal in the international RF and microwave field. The MTT-S Graduate Fellowship was established in 2006, and in 2008, a specific category was introduced for medical applications (MTT-S Graduate Scholarship Program for Medical Applications). The fellowship aims to encourage outstanding graduate students worldwide to engage in research on microwave engineering applied to medical applications, considering factors such as the academic level of the applicant's involvement in projects, the strength of the research team, and the applicant's experiences.

Each year, up to two winners are selected from applicants globally. In addition to receiving an award certificate, the fellowship provides a $6,000 monetary award and a $1,000 travel grant to attend the award ceremony.
