Dean of the Institute of Natural Sciences of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and Chair Professor of SJTU School of Mathematical Sciences Jin Shi was recently elected Foreign Member of Academia Europaea-Academy of Europe and Fellow of European Academy of Sciences.
Professor Jin’s study covers kinetics, hyperbolic conservation law equations, computational fluid dynamics, quantum dynamics, uncertainty quantification, interactive particle systems, molecular dynamics and machine learning, etc. He has made far-reaching studies in relaxation schemes for hyperbolic equations, asymptotic preserving schemes for multi-scale kinetic equations, semi-classical computation methods for quantum dynamics and random batch methods for interactive particle systems.
Professor Jin served as the Dean of SJTU School of Mathematical Sciences from 2011 to 2014, Co-Dean of SJTU Institute of Natural Sciences from 2011 to 2017 and Dean of SJTU Institute of Natural Sciences since 2018. The past decade has seen rapid development of SJTU’s mathematics, as it made it onto the list of China’s first-class academic disciplines in 2017 with an A-level evaluation and ran into the top 100 international academic disciplines. During this period, the Institute of Natural Sciences has sourced from abroad around 30 outstanding young scholars specializing in applied mathematics, physics, life sciences and data science, who have been playing a significant role in interdisciplinary sciences and applied mathematics. Professor Jin has made important contributions to SJTU’s mathematics.
Professor Jin said that these achievements couldn’t have been possible without the recognition in the international academia of the recent progress that SJTU has made in mathematics, and he thanked SJTU for providing him with an excellent academic platform and a favorable environment for scientific research.
