    1. What is the deadline?

    Application period (Graduate):

    For scholarship: Dec, 1 to March, 31 of next year

    Self-paid students and other scholarships under special programs: Dec, 1 to May, 31 of next year

    2. How to apply?

    Please fill in and submit your application at our application website http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn

     

    3. Do I need to pay the application fee?

    We have an admission application fee of USD130 or RMB800 which is mandatory and not refundable, but no extra fee is charged for applicants to apply for a scholarship.

    All admission applicants should pay the fee before the submission of your online application. The application fee can be paid through either online payment or bank transfer.

    If you have been awarded with CSC scholarship through your embassy or MOFCOM scholarship, you don’t need to pay the application fee. Under this circumstance, please inform us of your application information via email to gs.admission@sjtu.edu.cn for further instructions.

    4. Can I send my application and documents by email?

    No. We do not accept applications by email. Please submit your application onto our online application system Study@SJTUhttp://isc.sjtu.edu.cn/EN/ 

     

    5. Do I need to mail the hard copy documents to your office? What is the address?

    No, the admission application would be processed online, and applicants DO NOT need to mail the paper application materials to our office

    What are the language proficiency requirements?

    11. Can the language certificate be waived if I can get a certificate from my previous university certifying that my last program was conducted and completed in English?

    Please note that it might not influence your admission result if you don’t have required language certificate (for more details concerning this, please contact with the department), but language certificate will be considered as important supporting documents in scholarship evaluation. If you don't have it, we are afraid your scholarship results would be influenced. Thus, we strongly suggest that you prepare and upload it onto our website.

     

    12. What if I haven’t graduated or obtained my degree certificate now?

    You can apply for this year’s program so long as you can get your degree certificate before the registration time in Sept 2017. Please upload a confirmation letter from your university verifying that you are expected to obtain the degree certificate in due time. If you cannot provide it, we are afraid you are not eligible to apply for our programs.

     

    13. What is the “scholarship award letter”?

    The scholarship award letter refers to the certificate issued by the Chinese embassy or other organizations which verifies that you have been awarded with a specific scholarship e.g. CSC scholarship through embassies/MOFCOM program.

    14.  What is the “remittance notice”?

    The remittance notice refers to the receipt from the bank. If you have paid the application fee through bank transfer, please upload the remittance notice onto our website.

    If you have paid the application fee through online payment, you don’t need to provide the remittance notice.

     

    15.  How can I pay the application fee?

    You can choose online payment or bank transfer. You will see the instructions in the online application system Step 8. The application fee should be paid before the submission of online application.

    Online Application System

    1. How many applications can I submit in the online application system?

    One applicant can only submit one application with at most two preferences in the same language (either Chinese or English).

     

    2. I can’t find my program in the online application system.

    1.  What is the admission process?

    Your online application will get reviewed first by the international affairs office (preliminary review) and then by the department that you are applying to (department review). During the department review, the department might arrange a video/phone interview or other test for you, then decide whether or not you can be admitted.

    2. How long it takes for the admission process?

    It varies for different programs. Please contact with the department directly for more information.

     

    3. Is there an exam or interview during the admission process?

    For Graduate degree applicants:

    During the department review, the department might arrange a video/phone interview or other test for you, then decide whether or not you can be admitted.

    4. Why is my application returned?

    Please login your account on our website and check the returning reasons, and you can re-submit the application after proper modification.

     

    5. What if I find that I have written incorrect information in my application?

    If your application is under the preliminary review, please contact with us via email to iso.gs@sjtu.edu.cn. We will help return your application for your revision.

    If your application is under the department review, it can no longer be modified. Under this case, please contact with the department directly.

     

    6. How can I get the pre-admission letter?

    Please apply at the online application system to our office. After you pass the preliminary review and department review, you will be able to download the pre-admission letter from the online application system.

     

    7. I got the pre-admission letter. Do I need to confirm the enrollment now?

    No, we will email you when you are required to confirm your admission status.

     

    8. I got the pre-admission letter and confirmed the enrollment. What should I do next?

    Please wait till the formal admission letter and other documents to be mailed out after June.

      

    9.  I got the pre-admission letter, but I want to change major.

    Sorry but the major cannot be changed after admission. Please start a new application in the system, and we will reject your previous application and process the new one for you.

     

    10. I got the pre-admission letter. Does it mean that I also got the scholarship?

    No. Please note that the pre-admission notice only confirms that you have been admitted by SJTU, but cannot be interpreted as a guarantee or implication that you can get a scholarship.

     

    11. How do I track the status of my application?

    Students can log in SJTU’s online application system to track their admissions process. The online system also sends emails to applicants regarding their application status.

     

    12. As an international student, can I apply for scholarships?

    The Shanghai Government and Shanghai Jiao Tong University will offer scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students. Students will automatically get different levels of scholarship depending on their entrance test result. SJTU reserves the right of final explanation. Besides, applicants may apply the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) offered by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). For more information about the CGS issues, please consult the Chinese Embassy (or Consulate General) in your home country directly.

     

    13. I am afraid that I may not have a chance to visit SJTU before admissions. Is there a way in which I can get a sense of the campus?

    14. Does SJTU accept international transfer students?

    Except students who major in Chinese Language can transfer to SJTU in their sophomore year, SJTU does not accept any other types of international transfer students from other undergraduate programs.

     

    15. I do not have a high Chinese proficiency. Can I apply for undergraduate programs which are instructed in languages other than Chinese?

    Our University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University (UM - SJTU) Joint Institute has English-instructed programs (website: http://umji.sjtu.edu.cn/, E-mail: ji-intadm@sjtu.edu.cn), and SJTU-ParisTech Elite Institute of Technology has French-instructed programs (website: http://speit.sjtu.edu.cn/indexfn.html, E-mail: speit@sjtu.edu.cn). Please contact them directly. Except for the programs mentioned above, most of our SJTU’s undergraduate programs are instructed in Chinese Mandarin at present.

     

    16.  If I am not able to attend the entrance test, can I participate in the interview directly?

    Applicants who meet certain requirements in SAT, IB, GCE A-level may apply for exemption from SJTU’s entrance tests. For further information, please check our recent admission brochure.

     

    17. Is SJTU on a semester or quarter system? Do undergraduate programs allow students to start in the spring semester?

    SJTU runs on a semester system. However, students can select courses on the school’s summer session. We do NOT accept applications for January/spring enrollment from First-Year candidates.

    1. When can I get my formal admission notice and other documents?

     1. What kinds of equipments and facilities are provided in the dormitory?

    The equipments and facilities in dormitory vary from room types, buildings and campus, however, air-conditioner, telephone, cable television, self-laundry and internet access service are provided in all dorm rooms and buildings. Moreover, the basic furniture such like bed, desk, chair, wardrobe and bed textiles such like bed linen, pillow, quilt and mattress are also offered for free use. Lianxing Building, Asian Youth Center (Tao Li Yuan) on Xuhui Campus and No. 8, 9, 10 Dorm Building are equipped with individual bathrooms. No.9 Dorm Building on Xuhui Campus and No.12, 51 Dorm Building on Minhang Campus are equipped with shared bathrooms. Moreover, 24-hour hot water is provided in all bathrooms in dorm building.

     

    2. What is the housing fee rate for the international students?

    The accommodation fee rates are different depending on the room types and campus. On Minhang campus, single room ranges from RMB6600 to 9000 and double room from 4500-5100. On Xuhui Campus, single room ranges from RMB9300 to 11900 and double room from 4600-6600. (All for one semester). Visit Accommodation Fee for detail.

     

    3. How to book the dormitory?

    All international students officially enrolled by SJTU are required to login online reservation system to make a reservation (except for some certain programs with agreements in advance) (the website of the system is http://dorm.sjtu.edu.cn). Generally, the student without a successful online reservation is not to be arranged for on-campus accommodation. A successful online reservation will expire two week after the registration date. Also, the online reservation of the student who doesn’t register on time without application in advance for late arrival will be cancelled automatically. After confirming the reservation, student should pay the full amount of fee by online payment within the certain time period or the reservation will be cancelled automatically. The notice on the date, payment and details of online reservation will be delivered with the admission notice and the enrolled students are required to make online reservation after reading the notice carefully.

     

    4. Can I move into the dorm room earlier than the registration day if with a successful reservation?

    All new students are allowed to check in maximum 3 days prior to the registration date printed on the admission letter according to the relevant regulations of our university. For example, you are allowed to move into the dorm room after Sept. 10th if your registration date on the admission letter is Sept. 13th. Before moving into the dorm on campus, you could stay in hotel near campus for your early arrival.

     

    5. What should I do if I fail to make an online reservation?

    The student without a successful online reservation is not to be arranged for on-campus accommodation by the policy of the university. Therefore, you should prepare for the off-campus accommodation before your arrival. The information for the student without a successful online reservation about off-campus accommodation is listed as follows:

    6. Am I required to register if I live off campus?

    All foreigners are required to register his or her address of accommodation in the local police station after arrival within 24 hours by Chinese law. Meanwhile, the student living off campus should register his or her address and local contact in the International Student Service Center of SJTU as soon as possible.
